Poster: A snowHead
|
A new ice hotel has been built on Rettenbachferner mountain in Soelden, Austria.
A giant igloo, in places 6 metres high, it took four men just four weeks to build and houses up to 30 guests...
Of course the first question to most peoples minds is likely to relate to the sleeping arrangements. Well aparently the beds are made of snow, but guests get a "styrofoam and sheepskin mattress and heavy-duty sleeping bags to keep them warm at night.". So I guess there's a lot of call for the slipper warming service.

Welcome to SnowHeads RobW, It's unusual for me to be first to welcome a newcomer - not because I don't want to welcome people, but I'm normally beaten to it by some of the heavyweight contributors to the site !

And another Igloo Experience, this time under the Eiger and described in this light hearted article by Simon Davis in the Scotsman.com
Quote: |
The igloo experience was conceived as a corporate team-building exercise before being turned into a tourist-building one. Frankly, the camp looked as if some average middle-management Malcolms from Milton Keynes had knocked it up. |
And the concluding paragraph ...
Quote: |
Staying in an igloo will be a jolly experience for some, and you should give it a go, but I am not convinced that marrying it with two nights in a five-star hotel will work. The two experiences attract totally different people. The igloo is another rung on the reality-holiday ladder. Let us hope it does not get much higher. To my mind, reality is overrated. It is ruining television and, if we are not careful, it will ruin holidays, too. Holidays are for escaping reality. A company in the Dolomites makes you build your own igloo. Now that’s a deprivation vacation. |

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

In fact it was actually on top of the Mannlichen over 1km from the Eiger, but I guess that's Journalistic Accuracy for you, certainly it's not a location I'd want to stay in overnight, my guess given the description is that the Igloos were placed between the Restaurant and the top station of the Lager lift, hardly the middle of nowhere but each to his or her own I guess
