Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sixt Munich Airport

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Without starting another dreaded winter tyre discussion - has anyone used Sixt at Munich airport and do the cars come automatically with winter tyres. Other posters have advised that all cars by law must come with winter tyres, including hire cars and that if being asked to pay extra for them you're getting ripped off. Spoke to Sixt UK call centre and was advised that they do - mmmmm trust someone in a call centre Puzzled Puzzled think not (have to call them daily). Tried emailing the Munich office and no reply 4 weeks later. My booking confirms that the option for winter tyres has been excluded.
I have hired snow chains.

boabski, I have used Sixt (and most of the others) and hired chains and never really had a straight answer from the desk people. Best assume they're on normal tyres but at least they are new tyres. I can't imagine them going to the trouble of changing tyres on 000s of cars when winter arrives. I've never had a problem and only rarely needed to stick the chains on.

It's law that they come with "all season" tyres between November and March. Most likely M+S I expect.

boabski, Without going into all the stuff that has being said ad nauseum on this topic - German and Austrian Car Hire companies have to comply with the law which states that the tyres on their vehicles have to be suitable for the prevailing conditions. If they provide a car without suitable tyres and you have an accident then the insurance is probably invalid. If you or any of your passengers are injured, then you have a claim against them!

So rest assured the car with have at least S&M/All weather tyres if you are hiring in January as the whole of Germany is considered a "cold" area in January! wink

I'm sure the much more "knowledgeable" will offer an opinion or six as well as this topic seems to defy all logic for some reason!

I suspect for the extra charge you will receive a car with winter tyres instead of all-season M&S tyres. Winter tyres will perform better in winter conditions especially icy conditions.

Just checked the Sixt website and under the options there's a "Wintertaugliche Bereifung" (translated = winter tyres) which is €19.21 per day, snowchains were also listed at €7,79 per day.

What people generally refer to as "Winter Tyres" are the M+S/All Season/All Weather tyres. This is the law in Germany, and I'd guess Austria is the same. Snow Tyres are extra, and should not normally be necessary, especially since you have chains.
I have M+S (with the snowflake symbol) on mine and they work impressively well compared to the "Summer" Tyres.

I have just spoken to Sixt at Munich airport basically they said ....

There is no law that states cars must have winter tyres (all the time) during winter in Germany.

There is a law that states the tyres should be suitable for the conditions and the driver is responsible (and liable) for this.

The vehicle comes with all-season tyres (which do not meet the requirements of the law in heavy winter conditions).

If the hirer has an accident with all-season tyres whilst driving in winter conditions the insurer may not pay out the full amount and the hirer could be liable for the difference.

I was in the same dilemma (money Vs peace of mind?)as boabski and bit the bullet paying £70 more for the "winterised" car form thrifty at Munich airport.
I consoled myself that I could go early morning rallying & get value for my £70 tyres!! hic
But now I read that they and the car you book from Thrifty are a myth and you may all end up sitting on each others knees for 200 miles !!
what ever happened to Vorsprung blah blah
