Poster: A snowHead

Good to read in today's Staines Guardian that despite the threat of litigation leading to a decline in the number of school trips, a party of 92 special needs pupils has just spent an enjoyable holiday on the slopes of Prato Nevoso in Italy, accompanied by some 42 volunteer carers and assistants.

Staff catered for pupils' special needs, including autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe or moderate learning difficulties. |

"We've been running the trip now for eight years, and we've become really well known on the slopes."
The opportunity to go skiing is offered to all pupils in special needs schools in Surrey. Parents pay for the place for their child and the individual schools and the LEA organise fund-raising events to pay for the carers, assistants, and specialist equipment needed by some of the pupils.
The LEA also pays the cost for a limited number of pupils in certain circumstances. |

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ms hyweljenkins went with her school (she's a teacher) last year. They took about 25 kids, years 5/6 (juniors) to Italy for a week. There were three teachers, the chairman of the governors (a very keen skier) and a few parents. Everyone had a great time, with the odd tumble, but no serious damage.
Apparently, not only did they bring back the same number of kids that they took, but they brought *exactly the same* kids back.

My kids school stopped their ski trip, but the teacher who ran it still wistfully waxes his skis in the school gym each year.
