Kersh, excellent stuff! It helps that they've used old imagery as the current data set is, I think, awful for snow cover. Shame they didn't elevate the chairlifts etc off the ground though, it would have given it an even more 3d feel.

The Skiwelt (Going, Ellmau, Scheffau, Soll, Hopfgarten, Westendorf) had theirs available last season

Wish I'd seen that for last seasons trip to Westendorf. Considering how atrocious the printed Ski Welt piste map is, surprising it hasn't had more coverage.

I only found it more or less by accident.
It is linked to only from the German version of the www.skiwelt.at website, not from the English version.
But yes, once you can work out which end of any lift is the top, it is much better than the "proper" piste map.

It's 3d though so you just tilt the map? Or am I missing something?
Kersh, that is quality! This is going revolutionise pistemaps isn't it... it was only last season we first saw these, now we have scarily accurate pistemaps in 3D including width etc Geeks will rule the earth!

Kersh, i like the fact it is overlayed with a more snow covered image
I am getting itchy for the season already, been looking at my last trip photos!

alex_heney, the main problem I've found with paper piste maps is in large areas where one domain links to another but you can't match peaks and lifts on adjoining pages, eg PdS. Utterly bonkers. If you stay within one areas it's fine but then what's the point of being in an extended ski area? That's whay I started plotting the whole PdS in Google Earth 2 years ago.
On the other hand, a paper map is much easier to carry in your pocket.

I printed off several pages worth of the Google overlay to take with me last year.
Tilting those didn't help much
But being on the ground seeing them did.

I have a twin sim GPS touch screen Acer DX900. But its unreliable (crashes often) and in my opinion is pretty fragile. Its my everyday phone (at the moment, but i might throw it out the window soon!)
What GPS device do people recommend for the slopes?

A "proper" outdoors one. But why would you want one? There's signs, maps and piste patrol so you're unlikely to get lost.
If you need one off piste, you don't know the area well enough and should be with a guide.

I wonder how many resorts will hold off from having this information available, with the best will in the world rather a lot seem to have embellished their ski area on the piste map, with the reality being quite different at times

I think the only reason it because I love gadgets!

Looks like GPS data is ready for Les Arc

If you register at http://openstreetmap.org then go to Les Arcs, click on the edit tag then on the show gps tracks button you will see that there is quite a bit of user contributed data. It still needs someone to draw the lines (areas) over the pistes and add appropriate tags (also the update system to openpistemap.org is down at the moment!!). Once enough people have uploaded data the pistes just shade themselves in.

Geez - don't pay for that data whatever you do. Having had a quick 5 minute squizz at the data on the page you linked it's missing a good number of runs and got a number of errors in the way the runs link together.
Sorry but wouldn't get my cash...

Random scribblings of Dr John;
Trouble is these things are, at this stage of development, just a gimmick, and of almost no practical use. I'm a sucker for tech gadgets, and spend idle time pouring over google earth puste maps of places I've been because they give and alternative view. But they're a long way off replacing a pocket map. A pocket map doesn't require switching on, it can be read in (almost) all conditions, doesn't require batteries, and you can pin one to wall and scribble directions/meeting points on them.
I've dabbled with the tracking apps that convert a gps file into a google earth overlay showing tracks, total elevation, max speed etc, but after 5 minutes of mild interest from others the novelty wears off and normal conversation takes over, leaving one staring at a laptop screen looking a bit of a sad geek. I'm enough of a sad geek at work, certainly don't need to be one while I'm at play.

At least these things are real maps and not some warped bird's-eye view of the resort.
I find them much easier to read and, when the map is switched to terrain mode, I get a much better 'feel' for the place. Hopefully, the proliferation of GPS devices will encourage resorts to... erm, resort... to more traditional mapping techniques. Can it be long before some resort comes out with an app that lets you overlay your day's route on a piste map?
