Go most years for a short break, its ok for a 3 or 4 day break if you are a novice, any higher you would find it a bore after that amount of time.
Gets very busy in the spanish hols and at weekend and if its windy the lifts close.
Can get quiet warm in the afternoon and a little slushy towards the village later in the afternoon
We stay in Granada as the hotels in the village seem to be daft money for some reason,
The nightlife doesn't get going till after 2300hrs in the village, but there are plenty of bars that you can sit at after a hard days ski-ing and look at the views down the valley.
Depending on what time of year you are going you can spend a few days on the costa del sol as well as its on 2 hrs away.
Let me know if you need anymore info.

JasonW, that is my plan, flights to Malaga will be cheap then anyway so no need to book yet. I will probably head to the Alps but I will check out SNda web cams and snow record too at the time I need to decide

It's great if you are staying or living on the coast. A couple of days woulb be enough for a decent skier, it's very small ski area. When we were there it was bitterly cold, the skiing is at 3000m+ from memory. I wouldn't make a special trip from the UK just to ski there.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Get in a visit to the Alhambra if you haven't been (you can see the Sierra Nevada in the distance). Mind you, the traffic system in Granada is horrrific - you aren't allowed in the central area unless your hotel is in there and you then have to drive through a barrier after identifying yourself on an intercom.

Last year parking looked to be much more difficult than previously - advice was to get up there early if on day trips. I think it was because they had so much snow they were not allowing parking on side roads. We go up by bus from Granada. When the Spanish are on holiday it can be very busy so best to avoid those times if poss. And as JasonW, says lifts are closed regularly due to high winds - we always check before setting off but if you want to set off early to park then it requires good judgement! There are several other threads on this area - have you done a search for themmillsy13?

I go most years at Christmas for a couple of days. When the resort is fully opened its reallty great. With the Languna runs of the riight hand side valley the best. There are some nasty choke points on the way to the village.
The cold though can be unreal, nothing like the Alps. If its minus a few degrees on the mountain and the wind is blowing off the sea, it will cut thorugh any jacket you have. Its a martime cold not a continental one.
Other thing is that the ski boot hire is very very patchy.
Did the ski in the morning, swim in the afternoon thing once - good fun, although the Med, in March was still very cold.
Oh and stay in Granada rather than the resorts. Granada city is one of the best in Spain and has a really interesting moorsih influence. In additon its tapas bars are the best in the country.

If you can afford it there is a fabulous small B & B hotel made from a Moorish house of the 15th century (around a tiny courtyard with timber galleries all round and a small fountain. It is situated in the gorge right below the walls of the Alhambra (I can give you details).
