Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cycle panniers - what are good brands to look for?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So I have my nice bike and it has a nice rear carrier rack on it. I am also going to get to keep it as I move into my next job, as the plan just pays up as I leave Very Happy I am planning on cycling into town once a week now as I get to shift my working week around, and thought I would use the opportunity to bring back nice things like fresh fruit and veg from the market. This will will be easier to transport if I get some panniers for the bike. The thing is its a nice bike and I want some nice smart practical luggage for it that will still look good 6 months after I get it, rather than tatty and floppy. I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for brands that I could look at getting. Obviously the search for luggage has the usual Megamum criteria of it needing to be good value for money Laughing

Ortlieb are probably the best. They are certainly waterproof but, I imagine, are relatively heavy - not to say, expensive!

We have ancient old red Karrimor Iberians. Not very waterproof - so we have to use liners - but they've proved very tough over the years.

I've got some karrimore panniers, have toured with them 20 years old. The have some kind of easy clip on / clip off system. Don't know if they still make them.

I've had Karrimor ones for years (bought in a sale!) and they are waterproof and have worn well. Ortleib are the trendy ones, but pricey. Carradice are another good make. Look at http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/cycle/7/Bags_-_Pannier/ or http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/accessories/panniers for ideas. I must say prices now look pretty horrific. How about Ebay, or Aldi (they have some cycling clothes at the moment)?

Megamum, I cant vouch for Ortlieb panniers, but I can vouch for the brand. I have taken their drybags into some fairly rough conditions, and they're still going strong.

I still have the same three I've used for nearly twelve years of travel - not even close to giving up either.

+1 for general Ortlieb construction standards at least, if this helps.

welshskier, karrimor seem popular! Ortleib seem pricey where-ever I look on the net - ebay included. I must admit I was hoping I could acheive reasonable quality and wear and tear criteria for around the £25 mark. You seem able to do rock bottom quality on ebay for around £14 posted, or then it jumps to the £50+ category of the Ortleib (and I must admit I'm not overboard about their bright reds and yellows - though I guess they are that colour for safety reasons). As with most of this sort of stuff its useful to ask for recommendations on here so I then know what to surf and shop for over the next few weeks. I had never heard of Ortleib for example, now its something to look out for as is Karrimor Very Happy .

Ortlieb are pricy but have a very good reputation. I've gomt some Creek2Peak panniers - I bought some of their entry level pannier and they were rubbish, they broke very quickly. My LBS are great and replaced them without question, then they broke again. The chap who runs my LBS (LBS = Local Bike Shop) had a quiet word with the rep, as he's been selling Creek2Peak for 15 years without problems and was embarrassed to have recommended such shoddy gear to customers: turned out 2 other people had had similar problems in the same month. As a result I got a free upgrade to their top line models which are far better.

Have scout on STW to see what people over there think

Megamum, Mrs Ski has some Altura panniers, that she uses for the same purpose as you. Not waterproof, but a plastic bag liner keeps the worst out. And a lot cheaper than Ortlieb wink

Try Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. Their own-brand Revolution range is good quality and a bit cheaper than the usual Altura / Ortlieb options.

OK, I'll say it. Got Halfords bike hut ones, for our first foray cycle touring. They were [I think] about £25 a pair. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_389917_langId_-1_categoryId_165643#dtab

They were fine for our couple of days trip, and have got lovely bright yellow rain covers supplied. They seemed fairly sturdy, and DH has been out shopping errands with them since.

Now, bear with me. We shop each week at our local market, and use some pretty ancient rucksacks that are by no means waterproof. I reckon they are about the same size if not smaller than the panniers. So, I would reckon you would not be too worried if the apples and bananas got slightly damp [and lets face it, if it is hosing it down, would you be cycling to the shops Puzzled Toofy Grin ], and the halfords ones felt fairly sturdy.

Good luckMegamum, . I know you love a barg.

Ortlieb & Altura are probably the 2 best readily available brands

Karrimor used to be a brilliant brand. Then they went bust about 8-10 years ago & got bought out. Now all they make is crap, stay away.

I have Ortlieb panniers and they are really durable and waterproof and great looking after 5 years and so great for commuting, but, they are not comfortable to carry. If you are planning to use one to pop to the shops I cannot recommend them for carrying around the shops - the handles are not comfy and the bag don't look pretty.

alternative possibility- A friend's wife has a Basil bag and loves it.
