Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wax?

In the past while skiing my rental skis will be running fine until it starts snowing at which point they become extremely sluggish on the less steep parts of the piste. Now i guess this must be something to do with the type of wax which is on the bases or is it due to a lack of wax in which case they need to be redone at the rental shop. I have searched the forum but to no avail. snowHead Thanks.

just as a guess but, if i were renting out skis for a week a time i'd stick very hard wax on them so it lasted. so my advice would be buy a £10 travel iron from argos and a £7 block of all conditions wax and that should see you through 10/15 weeks nicely.

Get a tube of Zardoz notwax
Apply after each days sking, this will help maintain a nice glide for a full week without having to have them re waxed, that is unless you damage
them of course.
I have always used this stuff on hire skis and it makes a hell of a difference. Zardoz is a liquid teflon that you easily apply to the base of the skis using the felt 'puck' provided.
Peace of cake !

Available from Brighmans and Snow and Rock

As they are hire skis then take them back to the shop for a re-wax - never come across a shop which won't do this free of charge.

Yeah, wot RobW said. If they're rentals they service them for nowt. Or swap them for fatter skis if it's really coming down Cool

You have too much wax on your skis.

Not a joke. Take a nylon pot scrubber pad or stiff bristled brush and scrub the bases down, hard.

comprex, would this not leave the base prone to damage? I know they are rental skis so the OP probably doesn't care. How would to much wax cause the problem? I'm not so clued up on the whole ski base thing so would be useful to know.

anotherproblem, the wax makes a layer that is softer than the ski base on the surface of the ski base.

Sharp fresh newly grown crystals (that haven't tumbled much against their mates yet to knock the edges off) dig into this soft layer and slow the ski down.

ZN doesn't have this problem, fwiw.

Rental wax tends to be an all round wax. Fresh snow is very aggresive and will wear it out quickly. Carry a good rub on wax, Toko or Holmenkol, Zardoz works very well for wet snow but not so well for fresh. PS lucky you for getting fresh snow. PPS could also be that fresh snow on flatter pistes is just slower!!
