Rumours have been around for a couple of years over a plan to install a new gondola from Méribel to the Saulire, replacing the existing Saulire bubble. The lift would follow the line of the Couloir Tournier, where a new black run would be created. Although the project would be several years from completion, I did see some surveyors over the summer doing their stuff at the top of Tournier, so maybe this project is moving forward. Sad .... I like the Tournier as it is now

According to Courchnet this has now been confirmed, the new 8 man gondola will take two summers to complete and will cut journey times from Meribel to Saulire from 20 mins to 12mins. The new piste has not yet been confirmed, but i would welcome a 34th black for the 3 Vallees! Apparently there is a video to see also.

It's a very long time since I have skied the area but I remember looking down what I now realise was the Tournier couloir (the drop down to the left when skiing the ridge to the Grand Couloir?). I thought it looked very tempting but never had a track on it so I thought there must be a problem I couldn't see - perhaps avalanche danger or rocks?. Even if that is not so it would make for an extremely steep black.

The replacement of the Saulire gondola will be performed in two stages, one stage opening Dec 2011 and the second in Dec 2012, but I forget whether they are doing the top half first pr the bottom

.. and there is no problem ... IMHO it's one of the best couloirs off the Saulire

sev112, Each gondola will take 6, but it's quite old. The new gondola will take 10 or 12 I think, and be much quicker
