Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

They are good but not much fun in powder or slush, it all goes through the hole, I got rather wet warming up at Easter.

Laughing i hadn't though of that at all, still, wont be buying these, i love my dynastars but I just want to try out all the new racer toys. Been out of the game for too long.

Any advice for number 7?

5. Ski choices no. 3 or no. 4 when you don't know what type of snow is up there. Park / all mountain ski? WDF The One.
6. I keep thinking from your posts that you are around 19-23. Volant skis are for the over 60s ONLY, since they made the Machetes & Spatulas anyway.
7. WDF The Preacher or Faction 3.Zero stick some Dukes on these to give you options.

So too much over lap between 3 & 4, so take the Kastle and swap no.3 for a fun shape: WDF Redeemer (now in girly 180cms too), Faction Royale or Rossi S7.

parlor, I can see you and i will probably never agree on much, but thats good, makes life more intersting.

You strike me as one of these new uber cool fat ski "riders" who may be a perfectly good skier but mocks anyone who uses something shorter than 180 and narrower than 100mm??? leave us be, skiings all about what makes you happy (unless its snowblades) each to their own, dont assume your fat is the only way!!!

that said i feel i should justify my position:

1 & 2 race skis are excellent fun Its all about power and speed, RJS/sideshow bob, get involved here,
3 Big mountain speed is my new found love, and the stormrider rules there, pretty scared of heights tho, 4/5 meters is the biggest i can go without screaming like a girl
4 went for the Kastle 99, for a more turny, shallow power, tree run type ski, it was a hard one instead of the the 108, but the 99mm will float me happily
5 I love the scotts, hands down best all rounder i ever skied (i dont like the park, its too constricting so all round for me means piste and powder)
6 To contradict myself here, i agree with you, i have just always been intruiged to try them, never had the money
7 fan of the white dot stuff, but again pretty lost here, normally the only time i go backwards is when something goes very wrong, those a-lottas look pretty cool though
what about Lines, volkls or other big manufacturers?

The EP Pro model certainly - I would have thought (having not tried them though) - that the Motherships were much stiffer (indeed I thought they were being made stiffer each year, up to 2009 anyway as I believe 2010 are the same as 2009, could be wrong).

Sideshow_Bob, I don't have a 'mogul ski of choice'. I don't really like moguls, IMO, I can ski them - I just prefer not to. It's funny you should joke about the 130s. IME the best ski I have ever used in moguls were Line Prophet 130s - two reasons, shorter & softer (186cm w/ true twin) than I am used to AND I believe once you adjust your technique it's easier to ski moguls in a fat ski: less knee angulation is required when you're scrubbing speed down the back of the mogul. You want something soft but lively, and don't go too narrow. There are some snowHead that have witnessed that it's possible to ski Faction 13s in moguls without too many problems.

dulcamara, I wouldn't say new. In fact, a few years ago I had a very good argument with a chap on here about 95mm skis - his opinion that such a fat ski in Europe is completely unwieldy. The snowHead in point was once a advocate of not buying skis as you can rent and try as many as you like. 4 or 5 winters down the line the same snowHead bought almost the exact dimension skis he once thought were overkill. My point? Things change. (He knows who he is & we've skied together on fat skis Laughing )

As it goes I hate twin tips, they make the running length too short, they can add to hooking and they make for poor snow anchors.

I just enjoy a bit of cyber ranting. I get we're all different and I'm pleased that not everyone wants to ski off piste, there's enough competition for good snow already. The thing I really like to challenge is some retarded ideas like 'big mountain skis don't work (for me) on piste'. I come from a ski racing background, sadly I was too young to ski DH when I was race training but hated skiing slalom, I always got in trouble with my coaches for not wanting to turn.

Holding the g-forces of a huge GS turn is one of the best feelings in the world, the best feeling is making that same turn in powder. When there is no powder (or on the way to powder) then I still like to make the same shape turn but making them, even on race department skis feels boring when you compare that to a big fat powder charger. I hear people say all the time that these skis (100+ underfoot) are slow edge-to-edge, even if they are that just makes it more fun - you have to ski twice as hard, twice as fast and that = twice as much fun.

zammo hey, the 180s are a lot of ski. We're working on a 200cm version for real men.

parlor, that's like someone else here stating his best ever powder ski is a Nordica Dobermann SL WC, only because all the other skis he'd ever skied were narrower at the tip and tail, and as a result he doesn't really like powder Smile

I'd probably disagree with you when you say fatter skis are easier to ski in moguls too. For you maybe, but we've already established you're special Toofy Grin Specialist mogul skis are as narrow as race skis. Sure, I can ski my LPs in moguls but my race slalom skis are a hell of a lot better. Probably also helps that they're Salomons and hence softer than the ave SL ski. They'd be better still for moguls if they were straighter/less cut.

parlor, Do you simply dislike all short skis?? surely they have their place on the mountain too!

We're not disputing you cant do lots of things on big skis but there are things that do certain things better, saying that you have to push big skis to do everything or your a wuss sounds like macho bull to me.

Sideshow_Bob, I can't think of anything worse than trying to ski a nasty shaped ski like the Doberman, on piste or off. You bend it, it turns you. I like to tell the ski when I want to turn.

I skied a Volkl Mogul (dragon or something?) a few years ago, and some Salomon 720 mogul skis around 4 years ago. Have you skied them?

Are you talking real mogul skiing? Cut bumps, 2 x aerial action? In which case, sure get a mogul ski, but don't try to ski it anywhere else. As I said ^, I'm not a bump fan.

dulcamara, really? Where?

What does "saying that you have to push big skis to do everything or your a wuss sounds like macho bull to me." mean?

Bottom line: yes it's all compromise. I like to go very fast. The fastest ski I can take everywhere is the ski for me. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

what do you do when theres just hard pack and ice or flat light so you go play in dense trees, surely there are other skis you would want to use before 210 long 120 underfoot tanks?

like i say you could do it, but wouldnt you have a little more fun on something thats not a compromise, just for the sake of not not worrying that if you have shorter skis people might think you have a smaller todger???

do you by any chance drive a bmw or a chaved up 106?

dulcamara, you're funny, I like you. I live in a ski town, what are these hard pack ice? In 7 years in Verbier I've never skied conditions like that, skins on and off we go. I don't need trees on low vis days, I ski with my eyes closed most of the time anyway. When I do ski trees the Redeemers or the 13s are perfect due to tip rocker. Short skis are unstable and slow, they blow, get over it.

Why are you interested in my todger bro? I'm not the gay. Soz.

I'm actually between cars right now. The last two cars I owned were Seat Alhambra and a Daihatsu Sirion. I guess you could laugh at the Sirion a little, paddle shift, 5 spoke alloys, spoiler, it even had a CD player. Yes sir. I love my pimped out cars.

hehe no hate here parlor, but who doesnt love a good argument now and then.... every hero needs a nemisis!

I also think you may also have me a little wrong, I love long fast powder skis (i will have nothing bad said about my 193 scotts, they rock), I think twin tips ruin a ski (in and out of powder) and people who buy little twin tips for no reason other than to look cool are tools.

Dude, the Pure is NOT a powder ski, it's some sort of big mountain ski at best. Mostly just called a Freeride ski. It's 101mm underfoot, with traditional sidecut (22M R?) with traditional camber.

FWIW I think they are great skis, haha. Stick some Barons (you clearly don't need the DIN of Dukes Wink ) and you've got a nice day touring rig.

For POWDER skis I suggest you research the following:

Trad site cut (mostly rockered now, very few trad cambered):

Line Prophet 130s
K2 Kellbents
Rossi S7s
Sally Rockers
WDF Redeemer
DPS Lotus 120
... the list goes on...

Reverse Sidecut

Spatula
Armada ARGs
K2 Pontoons
Praxis Pow
DPS Lotus 138
...the list goes on...

parlor can ski moguls on his Factions, for sure...or were you on Preachers.....?? the latter, maybe...
doesn't matter he can ski moguls on what most people may regard as a dedicated or 80/20 or more, off-piste ski..

why would he want to use anything else on a typical ski day..?

And DM can ski his Dobermans as well...

Now, they may not be 100 % ideal, but they probably fit what the user wants to do pretty much all the time...and then any compromise condition is dealt with and on we all go..

I think it is the goal of everyone to find a ski they can take everywhere THEY want to go... sure, they may get hindered somewhere in some conditions.... and so a little style goes out the window...it doesn't stop you going anywhere

And I agree about TT's having lots of issues...
ski short and lose the tail when you really need it, defo poor snow anchor.. and you can waste time burying them when all you would want to do is stack them... bla bla

A semi twin tail is ok... so just enough to make a backward traverse easier, but full....? nah..IME
