Poster: A snowHead

I'm looking to buy some adjustable ski poles for telemarking and skinning. I was wondering if anyone has any experience (good or bad) that might be useful.
Lightness and compactness isn't a big deal as it'll initially be for piste skiing and "exercise" skinning (i.e. up pistes).

the Black Diamond flicklock design is much better than the ones you tighten by twisting IME. the latter are much more prone to loosening as you plant the pole then giving way at the least opportune moment
the BD ones with a built in probe are great poles but the probe is more hassle than it's worth

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The Black Diamond carbon adjustable poles are very nice. Not cheap though.

Thanks guys. Telemark Pyrennees have the BD pole probes reduced at the moment, so I've ordered a pair.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'd agree with the probe comment - good pole but don't rely on using the probe in anger as it's not long enough and the buried party will be dead by the time you've sorted it out!

I agree with Arno, the flick lock system is best (IMHO). The only problem I have is that BDs poles are too short. They only extend to 145cms max. Which for me at 5ft 10" is about right for classic (skiining), but much too short for easy skating. Always usefull to be able to skate - if the snow is hard or not too deep and there is flatish ground to cover (eg Cairngorm Plateau or the river valley back from the hidden valley in the dolomites) it saves on having to put on the skins and is quicker.

Thanks 22 dropout and Dave Horsley - noted.
My telemarking is a long way off needing arvo kit and I was just planning to skin up, rather than taking the lift, a few times over Christmas / New Year - primarily to beat the crowds!

22 dropout, the probe on mine is about 3m long which is long enough IMV but it's such a fiddle to put together (esp getting the baskets off) that you are much better off with a proper probe

Well, they've arrived. I'm very exciting.
I've also realised that I'm very sad.
