Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mooicidial Cows of the Jungrau Region

 Poster: A snowHead

My father who posts under the nome de plume of riverman is going out to Wegen for a holiday in a couple of weeks, should he be concerned about mooicidal cows?

There was a nasty shock in store for a herdswoman on Tuesday, when she discovered the carcasses of an entire herd of 28 cattle at the foot of a cliff above Alp Sous in the municipality of Lauterbrunnen. It is thought the herd fell over the edge some time between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday morning, plunging several hundred metres. The cattle were on the alp for summer grazing and belonged to several Bernese Oberland farmers. The carcasses were retrieved by helicopter on Thursday morning and taken to Zweilütschinen, where they were examined by a veterinarian, a gamekeeper and police experts before being taken for disposal. No traces were found of a wild animal attack. The incident was an item on Swiss television’s main evening news programme. It is possible that thunderstorms occurring in the area at the time frightened the herd.

Tosca, I wondered where in the area they were after they were all over the local radio (in Geneva). You wouldn't have wanted to be below them...

Most unusual, something obviously scared them, I suppose it could have been a thunderstorm, but despite there being no evidence of tracks in the area I know that the Jungfrau region does have some local form of the European Lynx (Mountain lion) or I suppose they could have been scared by dogs off of leads

Coastal sheep farmers regularly lose sheep over cliffs due to dogs chasing sheep in coastal fields, and occasionally cattle. I wouldn't have wantes to be under the cliff however.

There is a place where native American Indians used to drive bison to their deaths called prosaically Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump - more info here There haven't been any sightings of a half clothed man with feathers in his hair and a tomohawk near Wengen have there? Shocked

Possible, but I've seen the way cows out in alpine meadows deal with dogs. Was over in spain caving a few years ago and a spanish tourist let their alsatian of the lead. Preceded to chase one of the cows. As soon as it got close the cow hit it with a well directed kick to the sternum and the dog ran off yelping with its tail between its legs.

I doubt if there is much danger from mooicidal cows but there have been reports (in German) of cows attacking tourists this summer. However, most of the cows I have seen have seemed very friendly, so I wouldn't worry too much Laughing.
