Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It's the ski which the Fall Line magazine writers most like overall after testing.

Cheers!

Skis.
Ski-wise we think the award for the most refreshed new range goes to Atomic, which has worked hard to deliver a clean set of piste, all-mountain and freeride skis. We're liking the Snoop and the Coax - around the 90-100mm underfoot mark.
K2. has developed its range to take advantage of the frontcountry and sidecountry groupings, bringing the old Apache Outlaw into this sector, along with the Coomba - now 'Coomback' - and a series of other skis you can stick alpine, touring or telemark bindings on.
Fischer. have give the Watea freeride range a bow from the 94mm underfoot and up - it's like a boat, but for powder.
Salomon .have stuck a ski between the Lord and the Czar, again with about 100m underfoot, called the Shogun. With a bit of rocker, full wood core and cap conscruction it's light and looking to displace the Lord as Salomon's top seller.
Line. have an all-out jib ski - the Afterbang - made almost entirely of wood laminate for shock absorbtion, eco-reasons etc.
Dynastar's. naming department excelled themselves with their entry into the giant powder market, charmingly called the 'Big Dump'. After a relentless diet of German wurst, I can see where they get the inspiration...
Scott. are heading backcountry with a £700 superlight carbon ski, plus bespoke skins. We suspect it's because Herve the designer wants to go there. For the rest of us there are some outstanding graphic treatments, particularly on the Fall-Line fave Mission Very Happy

What won last year? - Prophets? Lords?

I saw a set of last years Missions on flea-bay, brand new in wrapper, sold for £150. They cant be that good in Fall Line's eyes at that price... Toofy Grin

I think it still has to be a big company, freeride ish but not too scary for a Euro skiing office cubicle monkey so Big Dumps or Coomback maybe. Not based on having skied them or anything as scientific as that. Movement have been making good stuff for years though so maybe they've got up there - Sluffs?

Storm Inferno or Whitedot One would show some love for the "native ish" industry (assuming native encompasses hairy assed Kiwis and Verbier residents) though, maybe an honourable mention for what they've got right 1st time out.

Nah read it in WH Smiths.

Actually to be fair to fallliner he usually posts it up and gives a few mag subscriptions away to shs or ensures the free gifts are too good to resist.

Ah, I'm good at this forum stuff - say something and then go swimming in a lake for a few days. Quite cold, lakes. I wasn't in in for a few days BTW, it just happened that in between posting and this I've been warming up.

Now then, who is spending the most with us this year... Actually, most spend has been cut back so there's no obvious candidate. [There was a bit in here but I've taken it out because it caused offence, though not intentionally. I have apologised to the person concerned - see below]

The Mission is still one of the Best Skis in the World according to me, at least, and at £155 it gets even better. What we're looking for is something new that doesn't appear to be a total marketing scam, and amongst the stuff that genuinely seems to work we found rocker... We also tend to look for something that doesn't take immense skill and strength to ski - actually, ratchet that down a bit to get skis like the Lord and the Punisher (ahead of the Scott Crusade and Volkl Mantra respectively because they need you to be in better shape than we start any season).

Herve the Scott designer is famous for designing ace skis and also slipping in something to spice his own life up - I went on a test a couple of years back and there were lots of very large, fat skis around, plus a gargantuan pair of Crusades which he'd knocked up 'to test'. The new Crusair has a bit of a specialist feel to it but is more useful than you'd think.

A few smaller brands aren't spending with us, Andrew Phyn of WhiteDot Freeride please take note may his formica-cored lumps of firewood stay forever in the rack gathering dust etc etc etc [We're testing a pair shortly in which case this view might change. Unlikely, but possible].

This is quite interesting. You're prepared to slag off a ski that you haven't skied, and even once you have skied it have already decided that you're not going to like it, regardless of how it skis. Hahahahahaaaaa.

Awesome. You don't sound like too much of a d1ck.

The fact that you named the individual, rather than simply the Company or indeed the ski which you dislike, speaks volumes.

+1 with parlor imho...

Ah, just got the heads up on this. And just spoken to Andrew to square things up.

Identifying one company in this way does seem churlish, however it's meant. I'm publicly sorry about that.

The issue is that the winky thing that's supposed to go on the end of that vitriolic attack isn't there in the post, thereby the witty negation of all that nastiness hasn't happened so it just looks like I'm being nasty.

Just to set the record as straight as possible, Whitedot and Fall-Line have a decent relationship and we are genuinely looking forward to testing their skis which should happen both in the domes and on the snow in the near future. We've followed the process of development over the forum and through conversations over the past couple of years, are planning a factory visit and doing some team rider stuff.

So do berate me for lack of ability to use this forum properly - over the years my laughable attempts to put any pictures up should back this up - but don't think that Fall-Line bears any ill will to WhiteDot or people therein. Or indeed any manufacturer whether they advertise or not - their skis still get reviewed and it has so far never been the biggest advertiser who gets the ski of the year award (and won't be this year).

God I hate the Mission. Such a nasty crutch ski. Your mancrush on their designer is weird, Scott's skis have seemed formulaic and uninteresting for the last few years - they were the only company with zero rocker in their lineup last year no? Everything I've tried skis like the training wheels are on them.

I'll note I've tried the Mission, Punisher and P4 over a couple of generations. To diss them untested, even if my view is anecdotal, would make me a bit of a cock - wouldn't you agree?

no mention of WDF, but the November edition of Powder magazine as read by me in Houston airport did carry an interview with Glenn Plake in which he described his best day's skiing from last year .... he apparently spent it with one Fred Syverson [sic], WDF's very own pro.
