Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thinking of taking the train this winter?

They don't make it easy to travel by train do they Christopher?! The Artesia website is frustrating. I'm hoping it will all become clear by mid December.

Helen - I don't think there is a paris oulx train that arrives that early. Not sure about the Briancon sleepers I think there are quite a few on peak dates so maybe the later one comes in mid-morning.

snowymum, Your spot on. In terms of competing with the airlines, they should stop this ridicolous policy of being able to book 3 months in advanced. I think they are missing a trick.

I've booked all my holiday up except for the TGV home, because they haven't put it up for sale. I'm flexible coming home so its not a problem if the timetable does change although using your words it will be frustrating.

The other TGV service I think if my memory serves me right left at about 10/11 in the morning and arrived at about 3 oclock in Oulx.

I think there is only one Briancon sleeper per night.

Christopher, there are sometimes more at peak times, but they arrive at similar times usually.

I'll think of taking the train this winter, but that's all I can do. Booking really needs to be available 6 months in advance, otherwise you wait, find the train doesn't work, and then see that all the cheap flights and ferries have sold out.

Took the snow train last April. Got a suggestion for 'em when they come back in 2011. Given they get the entire train, I reckon they should allocate couples and groups, for full couchette occupancy in advance, but all singles to be allocated on platform, i.e. spread over all remaining couchettes (obviously being at least a sufficient number). I'm thinking they should promote the train as THE mode of travel for the solo skier. They also need to spend a bit of effort at least providing their passengers with pointers for resort transfers, e.g. "Get a taxi because the bus leaves 5mins before the train arrives and the next one ain't for another 2 hours". Frankly, that would make the SnowTrain perfect. It's pretty close already. wink

Someone needs to do a seat61 for the skier. Might as well be the SnowTrain dudes.

The Eurostar/ski-train ain't the same.

crosbie, so I guess you missed the fact that the Snow Train isn't running this year then. http://www.raileurope.co.uk/default.aspx?tabid=481 was announced several months ago, and reported here http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=53179

there is a website for skiers travelling by train. It is a new website called Snow Carbon. However their booking engine just takes you to Rail Europe. As they don't take bookings themselves you can't phone/email them for information. I hope they will put pressure on the train companies to improve their booking set up and make it easier to travel by train.

It seems very comprehensive and the prices seem pretty keen. It covers all the options, both Eurostar direct and all the French options

EDIT - oops someone beat me to it Embarassed

Hiya everyone,

If I may throw my limited intellect into the fray...

If you are thinking of getting the E urostar, either direct from London St P to BSM or via a change in Paris / Lille, and need to get to London first via another train, its worth looking at getting the 'London International' (CIV) connecting tickets from E urostar. Basically, they're only available if you have a E urostar ticket and in my opinion are very good value. They also mean that if either your outgoing domestic trip is delayed and you miss the connection, you get put on the next available train; coming back, if the international leg is delayed, you can still get home without paying for a new ticket. As crosbie mentioned, seat61 is a good website and has a more comprehensive guide to what I just said!

We're getting it the 1st week in Jan, mainly cos all the flights I looked at were a fortune and I also quite like the idea. It is the daytime one though which I understand is a better idea than the overnight slog... If I remember, I will report back...
