Poster: A snowHead

I was in Courcheval last year, I think it was early december or late november.
There was plenty of snow around and the dumps came early so I could have got there earlier.
I'm not a big skiier I just drove there on a whim without any planning in my camper. When I got there I found I was a week before the season. Only the lifts in 1850 where running. The rest of the resorts all the way from 1300 to (I think) Val Thorens the lifts weren't running. The free buses were also only running about once a day.
There was few people around and there was all this snow going unridden because people didn't have a way to get up the slopes (even own transport is no good if you got on one to drive you like my situation).
Is there any way I can get some snow a bit earlier than normal? December seems a late time to start some years.
I thought about hiring Telemarks but couldn't be bothered in the end. I also had a powerkite (inflatable though) in the car, but I didn't know where I was allowed to go with it.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

jago25_98, I think resorts with all year Glacier skiing are still your best bet eg Tignes where some lifts will be running anyway and AFAIK they open more lifts early if there is snow. Having not skied earlier than January, I'm only basing this on reports I read over the last few years. Others maybe able to give more details. Hope it is early this year as I'm going to Tignes Nov 22-27.
I think some ski areas open at weekends before the normal start date if conditions are good enough.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Cheers. I might see you there depending on work
If there's no snow perhaps you could hire a mountain bike. There's got to be resorts where you can take a mountain bike on a lift. That would be a handy during summer

Flims/Laax usually opens mid November at weekends then fully from the last weekend in Nov. Other places such as Davos and St Moritz can be even earlier. Zermatt operates all year round. Many other resorts open as soon as there's enough snow. So I would wait for early November and have a look at Switzerland and see where the snow's good.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

jago25_98, there certainly are resorts where you can take mountain bikes on the lifts - Les Gets and Morzine for example - from the middle of June some of them were open and then they close early/mid September. Not all of them by any means but a selection. They are adapted though with bike holders (sure there is a more technical term) on the sides and the access/barriers are also adapted.

Pamski, Sorry, but what's that got to do with early season skiing?
jago25_98, Checkout all the glaciated resorts, as already mentioned Zermatt is open all year round. Tignes is open in late autumn/early winter and several of the Austrian glaciers as well. We are open for the week of All Saints but close again until 28th November when we open for the winter season. There are plenty of places that are open early - there's a thread about it somewhere on here. Also the Ski Club of Great Britain may give opening dates on their website.... Don't despair, there's plenty going on.

easiski, not much but jago25_98 had said
"If there's no snow perhaps you could hire a mountain bike. There's got to be resorts where you can take a mountain bike on a lift. That would be a handy during summer " so I didn't think totally irrelevant. Very sorry though if you think off topic.

jago25_98, as others have said, there are quite a few places that are open early (i.e. November)...snow permitting. I've been Stubai (above Innsbruck) and Solden before in November, and I'm pretty sure that places like Saas Fee and Hintertux are open. If they're open, these will all have several lifts running and wouldn't normally be too crowded.
It's all very snow dependent though - it'd be difficult to plan very far in advance, unless you went with the camper again and did some storm chasing
