If you drove you could stay on the edge of Bourg St Maurice in La Petite Auberge (nice and very cheap - €249 half board - with very nice restaurant) then ski La Plagne or Les Arcs or St Foy, or even Tignes/Val d'Isere (or the 3 valleys further still). Lift passes would be expensive, though.
or Ski the Haute Maurienne (Val Cenis, Val Frejus, Bonneval, La Norma etc) - you could use local buses or drive. Base in Val Cenis. Very cheap lift passes (about €18 for a day pass in the more expensive ones). Contact me and I'll give you name of cheapish hotel with good food - (€380 half board or €320 first Jan week).

cockerhoop, thats not a bad shout.
Reasonably priced lift pass for medium sized ski area 100km +, joined to Milky Way in Italy with 400km +. Also Serre Chevalier has 250km of pistes and is a short bus ride away.
Price of a pint closer to €5/4. Accomodation outside of peak times is also very reasonable.

I think the day passes are a wee bit more expensive than that but still good value. I did what you suggest last April and what is stunningly good value is the ski Maurienne lift pass which is about €82 is for any five days in the season and allows you a day in each of any five resorts and a reduction on any further days.

Yes, sorry, I was thinking of the average daily for a week pass. But day pass for me (60 or over) at Bonneval is €18.50 and the smallest places are less

Have you tried Austria.
Also I took the family to Slovakia last year and it was great value for money but the skiing was limited.
