So last week, whilst in Adelboden, with 30 Girl Guides, I went up to Jungfraujoch on the train from Lauterbrunnen, through Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg and then on the Jungfraujoch at 3,500m.
Really very spectacular trip, fabulous views of the glacier and surrounding area from the top. A touch of altitude sickness took me a bit by surprise, very dizzy and could only walk the speed of someone at least 50 years older than me, but apart from that, a really good trip!
No skiing , but it has inspired me to give Wengen a go next season!

I always love the faces of people who think Oh I'm fit I can go up there no problem, then they get up to the top and you can see on their faces that they are having a hard time, I have actually skiied all day up there (friends used to own the ski hire concession and baby ski slope) with no loss of breath etc. But I have a slightly unfair advantage, my lungs are about 25% bigger than they should be for some strange reason, so I cope far better at altitude than most people
However it is a lovely view from the top on a clear day and well worth a visit

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've skied on the galcier at similar altitude in Les 2 Alpes with no problem just had a coffee in the restraunt before starting skiing. However the altitude at Jungfraujoch seemed to make me a little poorly - not as bad as some in the group but not 100% and wasn't skiing just sight seeing...

the joch is weird, I can board all day in zermatt which is way higher than the joch (3454m) but on the joch I get a little spacey. It's better if you get out of the building and onto the gletscher, that building sucks the life out of people.

We were up there a couple of weeks ago during our stay in Interlaken. Apart from the long journey up and down, I was really impressed by the view and smegged by how all that had been made in the Victorian era. I got a little light headed as well, which I don't normally do so say at Tignes, put it down to the "quick" ascent from 500m. The view down the main glacier is something else! Hannah my 8 yr old went bum boarding but I drew the line at using the ski tow for the price it was, considering how short and not very steep the run was. Defintifitly worth the trip though as a one off.
Deliaskis, we you by chance in the group of guides we met at the castle in Thun?

stevew, I agree the rope tow is not cheap, but it's really only there for beginers, I only went on it because I could do so for free, I paid for it mind you, didn't have strong enough suncream on and got a severely burnt face as a result, the perfect example of panda eyes due to some excellent Bolle sunglasses but the rest of my face more or less pealed off over the next 3 days

We chose the wrong day (not that we had a lot of choice) and after a glorious initial 2 minutes we saw little else. The place was heaving. So what with the crowds and clouds we rather wished we hadn't bothered, given the high cost, but I can imagine it's a fantastic trip if it stays clear.

pam w, that's teh trouble, on a clear day people go outside so the crowds are no where near as bad, on a bad day everyone sticks inside so not only do you not get fantastic views but you feel like a sardine, I always tell people to make sure that not only is it a nice day when they start to go up, but they know the forecast is good for the rest of teh day

No but saw someone on it, looked interesting, didn't fancy the climb up to where it started from!

stevew, we didn't go to the castle at Thun, but may have been spotted in Adelboden, Interlaken, Kandersteg, whitewater-rafting near Grindelwald, at Trummelbach falls, at the Oeschinensee, and on the lake between Interlaken and Spiez! The area is full of Guides though, one of the Guide group trips holiday company specialists goes there, so we were continually bumping into other Guides.
Folks are right about getting out of the building, it's like slowly dying in a large overheated greenhouse. Once outside I felt much better. We were lucky as we had a totally clear day. 8 of our girls received one of their Guide awards by the flag on the plateau, which was hopefully more memorable for them than getting them at a normal Guide meeting in Wilmslow!

Deliaskis, if you climb under the rope there and walk towards the jungfrau then make a right onto the over hanging glacier that is where I decided was a good place to sit and smoke. Once I realised where I was I started browning the pants, was impossible to walk there, just polished hard as hell ice. Just one of many dumb ideas I've had.
