Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Drill Bits for Binding Mounting?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I realise you can use standard drill bits and some tape but I would prefer to use the proper tools for the job as I have in the past. Does anyone know where you can get hold of proper ski specific drill bits in the UK?

i.e. 3.5 & 4.1mm x9mm

Anything Technical quoted me £25 the other day -

If you email chris at skiequipmentuk.co.uk I'm sure they will sort you out.

CEM, Must have been a trade price? wink

I confess I didn't take them up on the offer but then I've not yet managed to get them drilled locally. Next week with luck.

Just one thing... this drills are meant to be used with mounting templates?? (sorry no idea if this is right word in English for that tool). If you don't have it (and it's different for pretty much every binding, so I don't think it's worth buying one, not to mention that I have no idea where you can even buy it), you can easily use normal drills.

You dont necessarily need templates. They help, but they're not absolutely necessary. You can even make your own templates if you own a set already mounted and drilled.
You can free drill, you could use a drill with a plunge if you have a mate with a workshop etc., you can always practice a fair bit first with a block of wood and stuff. You just need to be patient and exact with your measurements.

It all depends on your level of ability and familiarity / confidence with the tools. The debate seems to be if it's always worthwhile to get them checked or not if you DIY them.

(Besides a lot of the templates for the binding mounting have been made available on the internet anyway. You wont have a jig for the drill bit location, but you'll know where to drill - again a matter of confidence and familiarity with the tools I suppose.)

I've done it a couple of times, but atm by the time I get hold of the drills, bits, glue, vice, etc., I may as well just go to Slush and Rubble with my £25!

How available are the tools?, how confident are you with them and your new skis?, how many skis do you need to drill and is it worth the hassle if there's only one set? - etc.

Cheers!

Somehow I had you categorised as a telemark and cross country skier? If so, those are -not- necessarily the bits you want.

Excellent. Thanks for the responses. I Wasn't expecting so many replies! I can get these nasty rental bindings off the legend pros now.

No alpine and a bit of touring. I don't think my legs could cope with telemarking!

Bases are expendable up here. Core slides better on grass wink

Only one core shot in them anyway. Albeit it makes up for it in size.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

scottishskier, macho points only if you drag a foot-long sea anchor of ptex from the core shot.

comprex, yeh, that's about the size of it, if you ever see "The Black Rock" in La Grave it was named after the ptex he left there.
