Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French autoroutes move towards 68mph speed limit

Boris, Don't you be fussing your head. We have just come back from Annecy, via Bourg en Bresse, Reims and up to Belgium and TBH although I am only the nav, I cannot say that I felt that a) we were travelling slower and more inconvenently or b) that anyone else was driving any less mentally than usual [All previous comments about Belgians & speed and Dutch caravans however still do apply].

There were stretches of roadworks northbound from around Troyes to Reims, but other than that all went very smoothly. If it stresses everyone so much to be doing 2mph less than our UK limit, well....

They STILL there Shocked Crikey got held up by those at Easter ski trip.

I'm certainly not stressing about any reduction in speed limit - more worried about being driven into by someone else not paying attention

Boris, That road widening will be going on until 2010 section by section according to the signs, although on Monday quite long stretches were 'nearly' finished I guess they are trying to get them open for the big August getaway! By 2010 most of that entire part of the motorway network will be 3 lane.

Just returned from a 590km-each-way drive from Calais to the holiday home and I'm glad I didn't know about this before I went. Embarassed

As a driver who habitually drives at the ahem fastest safe speed possible rolling eyes , I'd be gutted if they introduce a 110kph national motoway limit in France. Most of the journey we just wound the motor up to 90mph, stuck it in cruise and let her roll, which is pretty much how I've tackled the pilgrimages to the Alps and elsewhere for the last 20 years. When the roads are empty (relatively) I don't see why not, providing you stay alert etc. I could see why they'd introduce a 110kph limit during heavy traffic as well as wet weather but a blanket reduction seems daft.

I've just returned from a 3500 mile trip across 10 countries. In Croatia and Slovenia drivers don't seem to indicate much but the back country roads are almost empty. Belgian drivers tend to drive way too close in heavy rain. Swiss drivers are a little hoggish in queues and don't always pull over to let bikes though. German drivers on the other hand are very polite and bike friendly. We mostly kept the speed down on longer stretches (on naked bikes I suffer from too much wind blast) but wrung the throttle through a lot of the Alpine passes at some decent speeds. We also managed to go in and out of Switzerland a few times and never got hit with the dreaded tax Cool

Top speed of the journey was an indicated 155mph but the only way to keep this up was to do a Norman Wisdom impression with your chin on the bar... not comfy for long Evil or Very Mad . To be honest we had pretty clear indication of static cameras and if you keep your levels of observancy up you can usually spot the police. Never had the slightest hassle from cops in Europe and we've done a fair few bike tours. It seems that there is more of a money generating scheme going on to tax the tourists on the main routes.

Apart from a few areas where there are signs with a speed limit showing a caravan (usually on downhill bends on the autoroutes), the limit in France is the same whether towing or not.

Boris, absolutely no issues at all...... stop fretting it's no worse than it's ever been and some might argue (as is their way) that be the general more enforcement of speed limits then slightly better!!

kiwi1, I have seen it go wrong all too often in France, last summer the caravan or rather what was left intact, was on the opposing carriageway the towing car was 20 maybe 30 ft up an embankment surrounded by rescue workers and the 3 or 4 other damaged cars were pushed into the outside lane so the traffic flow wasn't too badly interupted!
As we passed through the scene a helicopter was landing in the field next to the motorway Confused
So far this summer we have seen a 'fold flat' caravan embedded in the armco at Reims, the towing car facing into the traffic, the occupants wandering around the hard shoulder looking bewildered, unlike the UK the motorway was still flowing with a sole Police car parked in lane 1 with its lights on. Confused

No, the limit with a braked trailer in the UK is 50 on single carriageway roads, and 60 on dual carriageways and motorways (in all cases, except where a lower limit applies to all traffic).

If the trailer is not braked, and weighs more than a certain amount, the limits are lower again, but I can't remember either the weight limit or the speed lmiits off hand.

I bow to your knowledge.... when I bought an unbraked single axle trailer I was unsure, so phoned a friend (a Traffic Sargeant) and he said;
a) I couldn't drive like a lady's front bottom (which possibly meant I should pull over straight away and burn my licence),
b) I shouldn't be using my phone whilst speaking to him as it wasn't an emergency,
c) I couldn't drive in lane 3 of a motorway.

His view was that provided I had a safe load, wasn't being dangerous and never went near lane 3 then provided he wasn't able to class my driving in any other way (Dangersous, due care etc etc) and I was within the posted limits for cars then there would be no grounds for a ticket.

marcellus, The law is here

It does seem there is no longer any distinction between braked and unbraked trailers. I'm not sure when that changed.

Boris, You may find this website useful for your trip

There is an orange alert (difficult conditions) for outbound journeys this morning all over France. There will also be difficult conditions later in the day when rush hour work traffic and holiday traffic combine.

Quote:

Bad areas today are expected to include:

- the A10 near Orléans from 11.00 – 19.00
- the A6 to the north of Lyon until 19.00
- the A7 between Vienne and Orange until 18.00
- the A8 and A9 near Nice, Marseille, Montpellier and Narbonne from 15.00 – 20.00
- the A13 in Normandy from 17.00 – 19.00
- motorways through Aquitaine towards the end of the day

Tomorrow conditions are predicated to be very difficult in the morning and evening across the country and very difficult all day in the south-east.

Traffic is expected to flow well on Sunday morning but there will be an orange alert in the evening in the south.

Bison Fute is effectively the official "Traffic report" agency in France.
Pretty much all TVs/Radios get their traffic info from it..

I got stopped by the feds in Germany a few years ago for speeding with a boat on a trailer...

Me: "nah it's germany innit there's no speed limit"
Plod: "but you haff a ship - so zere is a limitz"

Me: "ok what's the max speed"
Plod: "Achtzig"

Me: Ahh
Plod: You haff to pay a tax

Me: (thinks) oh drat that's going to cost me...
Plod: Zwanzig Euro Bitte (20 euros!)

Me: Can I pre-pay so that when your mate down the road pulls me up later I don't have to stop.
Plod: Ich Verestehe nicht..

Still lesson learnedish - and only a pathetic 80kmh with a trailer...

Sounds very reasonable, bertie bassett, although I seem to recall that if you don't have cash they arrest you on the spot for vagrancy. Puzzled

bertie bassett, Laughing Laughing I wouldn't want anyone towing a boat anywhere near me at more than 50 mph, thanks. Especially as practically everyone I know who tows boats well exceeds the axle limit of their trailers and checks the state of the wheels about once a decade.

bertie bassett, german motorways do have speed limits contrary to popular belief! But if theres a speed limit these are put up with signs. Also, easiest way to tell if you're on an unrestricted (no speed limit) autobahn is to check if theres a speed sign after the next slip road. If there isn't = no speed limit. Unless of course the big video screens say you have a speed limit.

andyph, surely they just escort you to the nearest cash point? Isn't that what every country does?

that's an expensive way to do the job. The flic in France just relieved us of our passports and car documents and gave them back when we had found a cashpoint on our own, following his helpful directions. wink

pam w,

They do that at Calais... hand over your passport and tell you to pay 90eu..No ticket, mind..
so I took 3 hours to find a cash point and couldn't get any money out...in the end, they let me off with a warning..

So, some good,ie the let-off, but some bad, no ticket...and were they ever going to receipt it...?????????
