Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

if you don't go in expecting february powder, it can be good fun. bear in mind it's not cheap, and only open in the mornings, so you'll need to arrive the night before.

tignes is surpsingly buzzy in the summers, so might be worth staying a couple of days. loads of shops open renting mountain bikes and the palafour and aeroski are running.

if you drive over via the cormet du roselend (shortcut that avoids albertville/moutiers), watch you don't get stuck behind the tour de france.

There's tons of other things to do in Tignes during summer, and like dbx, said it's really buzzy.

Mountainsun Ltd are doing B&B from £20 per night - add three course dinner for £10 if that's of interest. See our summer offers at www.summeractivityholidays.com/pricing.html . All our in house hire equipment available and even clothing to borrow if you've not packed your ski kit Smile

Tour de France in the area 21st/22nd and down in Annecy 23rd - so, yes. Do watch out for that if your not interested in watching...

gmcparl1, It's a fair way to go, but worth it for the experience and also the drives over the mountain passes would be spectacular. Very Happy

Is it worth the drive to Tignes for their summer ski?

Definitely. There can be 15-20km of piste on offer. The skiing is usually open from 07.15 to 13.15 - but is usually very soft going after about 10am. Cost is about 30 euros a day I think. Great fun for a few hours. Check the weather forecast to make sure you are going when it's sunny - it's not much fun in fog/bad weather plus the views from the glacier are excellent.

IMO that's pushing it a bit....I'd say more like "Tignes shows some signs of life in July and August but is otherwise positively dead outside the ski season."

I'll be there this weekend and will report back. I had my first summer ski experience last year and was surprised by how much i enjoyed it. it's a different story to the winter though. Early early mornings can be a bit of a killer if you like your sleep but you can always have an afternoon nap. You won't want to miss out on all the other activities on offer tho'. Especially not hitting the ski jump into the lake (skis not compulsory).

funicular, palafour and aeroski running, shops, bars, and restaurants open, fair amount of people around the skate park, lake, pool, golf course, birds chirping, puppies playing in meadows, mountain bikers lapping the lifts, etc.... seems odd to nitpick over my choice of "surprisingly buzzy" to describe that. i didn't exactly say it was mumbai central station.

gmcparl1, the Twinner store by Grande Motte was opening at 8:30 this morning, as was the Favre Sport in Val Claret Centre. You can start skiing at 7:15 so it might be worth picking up your gear the evening before if poss.
