What does the story tell us?
If one hasn't got a Blackberry one deserves to die?
For the purpose of jamming one's body during the fall one can save the Blackberry money by carry a wooden wedge of equal 0.5" thickness?
Any mobile phone less than 0.5" thick is lethal in the similar situation?
Having a Blackberry, possibly issued by the employer, to show off but has not enough money to hire ski guide can endanger one's health?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

However, his mountain guide made a distress call and rescue workers came to cut him out of the ice. |

My Crackberry is the size of a small house to get that querty keyboard in.
Any phone that size would save me as long as the crevasse was not bigger than said house.

Skola, why are you puzzled? The reason you wear a harness and caribena, whilst skiing on a glacier with a guide, is that they may be needed. Even the best guide is not confident there will be no accident.

achilles, I'm equally puzzled as Skola.
I thought the point of having a mountain guide on the glacier is so one doesn't fall into the crevasse?
I understand avalanche is not an exact science so a guide isn't a guarantee of not getting caught in one. But I'm not aware the same "inexactness" applies to crevasse.
More over, if the client was roped up with the guide, the blackberry wouldn't have matter, not?

It is possible for snow bridges to form over crevasses, and if they are weak its possible to fall through them.....from the surface you can't tell that they are there...
I doubt the blackberry will have made much difference, half an inch...its not exactly much extra!
