It depends what exactly do you need. Personally I always stay when covering WC races in Zauchensee in small tourist farm just out of Altenmarkt (less then 10min drive to Zauchensee). It's pretty cheap (between 20 and 25eur for B&B), very home like feeling and for my taste, it's one of best B&B I have been using, during all WC races I have covered. But you need car to get around, so if you are flying to Salzburg/Munich and getting taxi from there, so you are without car, this will not be option for you.

Hi Bramhall182, Alpenrose is also very good, you could also stay in Flachau and ski over to Zauchensee via Flachauwinkl, the bus connections are excellent, We usually ski Zauchensee in the morning and go over to Flachau at lunchtime as Zauchensee gets shady and the light can be tricky for the kids if they are beginners, The Herman Maier ski school was really good, when my daughter had to miss a few days due to a cold, they let her join another course when she was better at no extra charge, and they all spoke perfect English.

I've stayed in the zauchenseehof a couple of times. Rooms are a good size and well maintained, food is very good, staff are polite and attentive. Extremely close to to ski lifts, and slopes (ski in ski out), and ski school. The owner of the hotel and ski school is Michael Walchoffers father. Both of my kids went through the walchoffers shi school, and I very impressed with their progress. Hillwood holidays use the hotel, and have (or used to),evening activities running for their guests. The swimming pool is small and enjoyed by kids rather tan adults. I found staying in the zauchenseehof very relaxing. And Yes I would happily stay at thew Zauchenseehof again.

Zauchensee is basically a horseshoe shape around the ski lifts.
Most of the hotels are very near either the worldcup arena or the lower gondola.
You do pay a slight premium for being up there but as primoz says, there are lots of alternatives in and around the area.
Altenmarkt is at the bottom of the road from Zauchensee, Radstadt is 5min from Altenmarkt but has an adjoining mountain... it is also very easy to get around to other bits of the Amade region (Schladming, Reiteralm etc..) from Radstadt as there is a good bus system.
primoz, do you cover the mens and womens WC?... if so then let me know when you are at Reiteralm, Schladming or Zauchensee next season be good to meet a roaming !

I am defintely staying in Zauchense due to children and need to be close to pistes. We would rather take a bus into the village (altenmarkt) for other things.
I now need some detailed advice between the hotels here - trip advisor and other sites are limtied and the hotels themselves don't seem to answer my questions clearly enough. Key is luxury, childcare and food.
Zauchensehof
Salzburgerhof
Alpenhof

bramhall182, give th ehotels a ring and find out about childcare.
To be honest this is th eone thing that lets a lot of areas around here down.
Maybe that is why the Austrians do so well at skiing - if they are old enough to breathe then they are old enough to ski!

I didn't think there was ice skating in Zauchensee, there is in Altenmarkt town and in Radstadt.
I haven't stayed in any of the gaffs (no real need to ) but I do know they are all of a very good quality and you certainyl won't be upset with the accommodation.
