Poster: A snowHead
|
we're thinking of hiring a motorhome for 2 weeks during xmas and new year and travelling along the Verbier to Zermatt/Saas Fee corridor.
has anyone else done that or done a motorhome tour of the alps?
what are we going to expect
how to go about it
where to camp / and possible caravan club sites
where to park
how much is parking
how long in each resort
which resorts to avoid if lack of snow
where to do our clothes washing
what are the costs of camping etc
best place in south east to hire a campervan or does anyone want to rent one to us for cheap...
thanks

innerspaceservices, There's a place on the Belgian coast that specialises in camper hire and has new vans with winter specs, I'll see if I can dig out the contact details and post them here

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

innerspaceservices, have you tired to search - I do recall a couple of threads about this and there is one snowhead who goes to (I think) Livigno every year in a motorhome.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

innerspaceservices, As holidayloverxx suggests, do a search.
I toured the Alps in a motorhome for five months a little while back. I should really have done a write-up but was too busy having fun. I can't comment on where you are planning to travel as I only visited Andermatt and Engelberg while in Switzerland but experience there was that you may only camp in particular places and pay for the privilege (can't recall how much but it wasn't cheap).
How long in each resort? I would suggest as long as possible - packing up and moving the motorhome was always tedious (although we had a lot of gear to secure). Besides, at that time of year you will be moving (and finding new campsites) in the dark if you want to make to most of skiing time.
It's certainly worth doing for a long period - not sure I'd be bothered for only 2 weeks. Either way though, I'm sure you'll enjoy

innerspaceservices, I replied to your post in your other post in Chalets and Appartment. I've used http://www.northernleisure.co.uk/ these guys before and am bringing one of their campers to the Hemel meet for people to have a look at. They are talking of placing some motorhomes in France so people can fly to Geneva and collect the motorhomes there but they just mentioned it to me so not sure if it will happen. I'm sure they'll put it on there site if they do it.
Their homes are all winterised with underfloor heating etc but as mentioned I'll have one at Hemel for people to check out on the 6th and they talked about snowheads discounts also.

We hired a motorhome from this motorhome hire company
One problem we found was that the water pipes froze up, check with the motorhome hire company first that the motorhome is fully winterized (all pipes lagged)
Other than this small problem, it was an awsome and cheap easy to way to get to the slopes...

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
