Ski racing's main event of the winter - the World Ski Championships in Bormio, Italy - begins tonight (Friday) with the opening ceremony. The authority of the International Ski Federation is under the spotlight, drug-testing is on the agenda for the first time at this event, and ski racing faces the usual challenge of delivering thrills and relevance to the public. This world event is a curtain-raiser to a bigger Italian drama - the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics next winter - though the Bormio (Stelvio) downhill promises to be a particularly exciting test ...
Tension between Italian skiers and the FIS adds a twist to this event, following a row at the Schladming slalom last week, where the timing equipment went wrong (see separate news items) and accusations of impropriety flew at the Austrians from Italian racer Giorgio Rocca. But the real questions are, correctly, who's going to win the major races at Bormio: the downhill, super G, GS, slalom and combined events?

To keep tabs on TV/internet/press coverage, it's useful to know the schedule of races (which is obviously subject to change if the weather doesn't perform to schedule):
Check the official Bormio website: www.bormio2005.com for the calendar.
TV coverage listings to come. Anyone with access to satellite coverage info., please contribute.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I wonder of Darren Rahlves will be fit enough for Bormio? I caught his spectacular crash on the Tuesday morning Ch 4 programme - terrifying!

PG's opened a thread for today's Super G - click here - and how to view it on Eurosport. I'll have a root around to see what the BBC are broadcasting. Not sure if Channel 4 have any rights/plans to transmit from the Championships (which go on for 10 days) - anyone?

I caught Channel 4's program yesterday, and they announced that will be taking a break until Feb 20, so it looks like they won't be covering it !
Ski Sunday it is then !!
