 Poster: A snowHead

I am currently skiing on Salomon Streetracer 10: an on-piste carving ski. It performs really well on a groomed piste but not on powder, crud or off-piste. I would like a more versatile ski, mainly for on-piste but able to handle varied conditions. I am an experienced intermediate, quick but not super-aggressive. Any recommendations?

penster, I would try the Salomon Tornado. It's actually a 50:50 ski but from a piste background. They do a standard and a Ti version, the Ti being stiffer. I tested the Ti this year and it was a great ski, really held the edge well. Like you i'm an experienced intermediate who likes going fast on the piste and it was great. Off the piste I can't really tell you what it's like because my skills aren't good enough although I did venture off the piste ... and disappeared into a cloud of pow! I'm sure it will be improved for next year so i'd recommend giving it a go, either in a resort or at one of the UK snow slopes with Ellis Brigham.

PamG, I'd second Movement Spicys. They're very light and work very well on and off piste. My wife loves them in all conditions.

penster, how much do you weigh? If you're light you don't need such a fat ski and don't need to compromise piste performance so much. If you're heavy then you should have a decent width underfoot if you're really intending to do 40% off piste.

Sorry to hijack this but my requirements are so close to penster's its probably not worth a new thread...
I also ski mostly on-piste but want to spend my next couple of trips learning to ski in powder so the 60:40 piste:off-piste split is about right. I'm 172cm high and about 65 kilos last I looked. Not sure about aggression but I do try to ski slightly beyond my ability whenever its safe to do so... I have only had about 4 weeks on skis since my first trip in January this year but am skiing blues, reds and occasional blacks and just starting to play around off-piste.
I hired a pair of 165 Völkl Tigers earlier this year in Flaine - not sure the exact model (duh) but they were mostly white and hired from Ski Set in their Silver price band. I loved them on piste and felt more confident than I ever have but never tried venturing off-piste and they seemed maybe a bit sluggish on the straight ahead. For my recent trip to VT I bought a second hand set of 165 Fischer RX8s - probably the 07 model. They seemed pretty keen on pointing out the flaws in my technique and were quick to punish any mistakes with the result that I am slower and less confident with the RX8s on piste than I was on the Tigers but probably technically better. I tried the RX8s in some powder at VT with mixed results but have nothing to compare them to...
I also have a set of 160 Streetracer 8s for hashing around the heather in Scotland...
I guess what I really want at this stage is a set of skis that will give me a little more confidence than the RX8s and help me with the transition into off-piste. If I can manage another 3 weeks in the alps next season as planned I hope to progress pretty quickly so I would either need something cheap/second hand that I can sell when I outgrow them or (if it exists) a pair of skis that will be ideal for whatever the next few seasons will throw at them.
Any and all advice much appreciated, even better if you have spotted something in the classifieds that will do the job!
