Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

There's quite a lot of snow specific jargon on here that I really don't understand (I'm just not with it!). So I thought I'd start a thread where we can ask for clarification...

I'll start off by asking what is meant by 'couloir' in a skiing sense, I know it is the French word for corridor...

queen bodecia, I take it to mean a narrow chute, generally steep with rocky sides.

A steep narrow chute with rocky sides? Sounds terrifying. I assume this is something people might encounter off-piste. They're welcome to it! LOL!

laundryman, generally true, although I suppose in theory they don't have to be steep Puzzled

queen bodecia, here is the top of one

and in the next couple of pics. Would be nice to show you some from the descent but regretably having gone into the top and stood around for a bit we had to climb back out again rolling eyes

Thanks Yoda. The term 'corridor' makes perfect sense now. Far more frightening than anything I'd ever contemplate. Fair play to yas...

As well as a corridor, "couloir" is French for a gully.

A point where the piste steepens appreciably, so that anybody travelling straight down the fall line at speed will launch into the air off it. But it steepens in a curve rather than over a straight edge.

Most of the jumps you see downhill racers taking are off rollers.

It is a term used just as much by skiers as by boarders.

roller.. small ridge
couloir.. large wide piste that has tiny ridges at either side where the piste basher has shoved some snow
massive air.. a total lie about a tiny wibble when your mate wernt looking..
massive session .. the one where you turn up late after a shower and dinner to meet your mates who still have ski gear on from 3 pm and try to claim tour hero by staying up till 10 pm..
carving.. hahaha oh please.. skid off!!!
jib off something.. er total ballcocks about spending 30 minutes stuck on a ledge until someone else comes past and you follow them
