Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Coccyx Injury

Can anyone offer any advice please?

It is nearly 3 weeks since I was taken out by some incompetent out of control skier whilst I was stopped at the edge of a piste! End of the day, outside a bar, about to take skis off when this nutter comes careering into me with such force that my bindings release and I end up sitting smack down on my tail on hard pack.

At the time it was agonising and I thought I had broken something. I took regular painkillers and after a few days it seemed to be improving somewhat.

However I would have expected it to be significantly better by now and it is not. I can only sit/lie in certain positions and it is aching all the time.

Has anyone got any experience of this or similar? Worth seeing the GP? Any medic snowheads here who can offer any input? Or is it just one of those things that will take time?

Thanks.

Always worth seeing the GP, if in any doubt at all.

Go see your GP. It's what he/she is there for. Sooner the better.

Hope your recovery is speedy and complete.

The coccix is a nasty one - had a small bang to it once and it was sore for absolutely ages. I'd agree with the others though - get it checked out, that's what GPs are for. Three weeks sounds a while - was there any inflammation?

Sarah, I had a fall down stairs years ago and it took several month for the pain it to settle, sorry. Go and see your GP and get some stronger antinflamatory/painkillers. Take care.

I too had a slip on the stairs and did some damage to my coccyx. I didn't get it checked at the time and now, 5 years on, I still get grief from it if I've been sitting too long (flights, driving etc.).
GET IT CHECKED ASAP..........I wish I had!

Thanks all, much appreciated!

I have made an appointment for tomorrow.

Shame because we are off again on Thurs just for a long weekend with friends and I was hoping it would have resolved Sad .

It doesn't stop me but it did seem to make ski like a complete beginner on crowded pistes, just absolutely terrified now about being taken out again, made my hubby ski right up behind me so as to 'block' out any more out of control idiots!

Chriopractor - it's the way forward (or at least to sitting down). If you've knocked something out of line, then painkillers will only mask the problem and your body will compensate by tightening up some muscles elsewhere.

OUCH ... once you've got the acute pain sorted (whether through chiropractic, osteopathy, orthopaedics, whatever ...) I recommend some pilates and yoga. I put my coccyx out giving birth 8 years ago (actually it wasn't me that put it out, it was some little blighter, now aged 8 who skis too fast for his own good ...) and had terrible pain; have only got it under control by doing a year of pilates (the most boring discipline ever) and then moving on via iyengar (gentle) yoga to ashtanga (hardcore) yoga. Now I don't have any problems at all and the bonus is - a flat stomach! (it's all to do with core strength, which you build up by strengthening the internal abdominal muscles, and protecting the back).

Get checked out at doctors before you go to chyropractor or osteopaths. I damaged mine in a motorbike accident years ago (boyfriend did wheelie and guess who fell off the back - yes, ouch.)

I had xrays, was on pain killers for over a year and still suffer in extreme cold from a nawing nagging ache there. If I bang it accidently I could scream. The hospital suspected a hair line fracture.

It was god, 20 yrs ago and still giving me jip.

I do, however totally swear by osteopaths and was visiting mine only last week for a once over pre ski holiday! And, will no doubt be back on the table upon our return to UK. snowHead

Sarah, you have my sympathies. "Tail" injury can be very painful. Good news is that it should clear up in time, and is not usually indicative of anything serious (http://www.emedicine.com/aaem/topic113.htm). You should still attend your doctor's appointment tomorrow.
A pity you didn't have a bum pad on (www.dianese.com): saved my life (or at least my bum) when I was learning to board in last month.

Sarah, poor thing....I did much the same thing in Serre Chevalier last year. Slipped on ice and banged down on my tail bone so hard I couldn't get up for ages. It took at least three months to settle down, sitting was very painful for any length of time. I have to say I didn't seek professional help just waited it out and it did get better on it's own with the judicious use of Ibuprofen. On a positive note it didn't interfere with skiing at all....just a bit of a problem sitting on chairs.

Just one thing....if it doesn't start to settle on it's own you should go and get it checked out. A girl from my office fell down the stairs seven months ago, she's been off work since and is now waiting for an op to sort out her broken coccyx....so it's got to be worth having someone look at it. Sort of do as I say not as I did! Very Happy

Get advice off a Doc then a visit to an Osteopath. I used one over a trapped nerve in the T4 vertebrae and he worked wonders.

Sarah,
A bit late now, but you might consider wearing some protection. I have recently acquired some Dianese trousers with hard bits in strategic places, for when I'm in the mood for doing silly things. Figured things take too long to heal at my age. If coccyx is a weak area, this could save you some pain in the future.

Sarah, I had exactly the same kind of fall a few years ago whilst ice skating; can still vividly remember how excruciating the pain was.

Mine was just badly bruised, and it was around three months before the pain disappeared completely. Hope yours turns out to be bruised rather than more serious damage. Fingers crossed for you!

All of you, thank you very much for your advice and support.

The GP was great, suspects fracture and has organised xrays for next week, and has given me anti-inflammatory/analgesics. It isn't stopping me from doing anything other than sitting down and lying on my back, then it takes me ages to get a comfy position.

If something is misplaced I will go to a chiropractor, as so many of you have suggested, see if they can replace it! I have already had ultrasound from my physio but that didn't seem to help so today she gave me acupuncture! It is perhaps a little improved.

We are off tomorrow for 4 days in Courchevel snowHead

I just hope I can ski without holding back too much, terrified of having a repeat performance rolling eyes

Get some padding. The cheap option that boarders have suggested is to cut up a camping mat (the foam ones that cost about £2), and stuff that down the back of your trousers.

Won't you need a surgeon to replace your coccyx? Oh - I understand! You mean move it back. I thought you meant replace - as in, take out and replace with a new one!! Embarassed

Each back injury is different to the next. I had a problem a few years ago and went the usual route, doctor etc and ended up seeing a back specialist who informed me I had a "back problem" and advised me to rest it (talk about the bleeding obvious). I saw a physio who in the end was asking me what I thought they should try next!! I ended up seeing a chiropractor who X rayed me to discover my pelvis was lopsided. With twice weekly manipulation for about 3 months it was pretty much sorted. In my experience when it comes to back problems doctors dont fuly appreciate the concept of cause and effect, and are too quick to just diagnose painkillers.

Absolutely. With my trapped nerve my Doc wasn't interested. Just prescribed painkillers. Totally useless!

I dont even bother visiting the doctors if my back plays up (which it does - a lot) I just ring my osteopath and its over and done with in a couple of visits.... I am scared of chiropractors though.

They're not all violent sadists. They come in many flavours, just like skiers! I went to one somewhere in London, couldn't feel anything happening until I got up. Brilliant practitioner, shame I can't remember the name.

btw, how do you get to be super-showHead?

Thanks for all your support with this the other week..just to update you..

I had the result of my xray today and the radiologist's report is that the tip of the coccyx is detached! Crying or Very sad

My GP has spoken to him and to an orthopeadic surgeon and there is nothing to be done at present except take anti-inflammatory drugs and expect it to be painful for at least 2-3 months. Hopefully it will eventually settle on its own.

I am glad I went for the xray, at least I know now what's wrong. My GP is sceptical but I think I might try a chiropractor.

I am definitely going to get one of those azzpadz for next season, thanks a lot for suggesting it dolphingirl Smile

Sorry about your coccyx, but I thought the tip of the coccyx was always detached (see http://www.coccyx.org/whatisit/unstable.htm )

MartinH, I think this is men's fault. The textbooks admit that nitrous oxide (laughing gas, sometimes known as gas-and-air) is often not successful in controlling poor mum's pain during labour, and put this down to poor technique (not starting inhalation at start of contraction, but waiting until the pain hits). However research now suggests the reason is in fact the dad-to-be stealing the stuff: as he is not down the pub (where he ought to be, but some stupid modern fad has forced him to be in the labour ward), he is "in need of refreshment", and has found he can get a similar effect to 2 pints of lager from the the gas. So dad gets the gas and a lovely high, Mum just gets the pain. C'st la vie!
