However, a local Vancouver newspaper yesterday questioned the reports, saying that the number of murders this year is similar to last. |
Right. The trouble is that last year also saw reports on the risising violent crime. So the same number of murders would be a continuation of a bad situation, not an improvement.
Vancouver is one of my favourite cities in the world. It's great. But it has always had a massive drug problem, and in the past few years that drug problem as turned increasingly violent. That's undeniable and shouldn't be ignored or swept under the carpet. But some perspective is also needed, and it's still a beautiful and (mostly) safe city. If you want a crime-ridden Olympic venue, look at the 1984 summer games. or 1996 summer games. Violence in Vancouver pales in comparison.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

...and if you compare it with the venue of the 2010 footy world cup...

Pretty Typical of most US/Canadiasn/UK cities. Media and entertainment lead violence slob culture.

That's not really fair, at least not in the case of Vancouver. It's more a case of a major entry point for heroin into NA as well as a transit point for the massive domestic marajana supply leading to gang violence for control of that trade. On top of that a sizable (and shockingly visable) junkie population desperate to support its habit. I don't see how any of that is the fault of the media and entertainment industry, and I wouldn't exactly call it slob culture, either. We're not talking about lads getting pissed on a Friday night and beating each other up when the bars close. We're talking about junkies robbing people so they can fix and drug gangs fighting over turf and supply.
But a tourist can generally avoid all this apart from the junkies (sometimes rather aggressively) asking for change.

...besides, all good snowheads will head straight to Whistler anyway rather than wandering around East Vancouver.

What a difference 6 months makes............back in October 2008 the story was this
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2008/10/24/bc-murder-rates-vancouver-gangs.html
Maybe the truth is that you cant really draw any conclusions from one set of "snapshot" statistics.
Speaking personally, my sense is that a walk through downtown Vancouver would be a better bet on a Saturday night than the equivalent in say Edinburgh or Glasgow (the closest large cities to me)....but then maybe none of them would be a good bet !
The answer may be to visit any of them and take a taxi if you are out and about.....which is what we tell our kids to do.
