Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is a carving ski the same as a normal ski?

Hi,

Have just seen these on ebay and wondered if the "carving" is specialist or if thats just a general word used in ski descriptions?

Cheers

"Carving" can mean specialist on-piste carvers (it is very seldom used for current skis) but in this case it means that the ski is from about 12-13 years ago when 'straight' skis were initially being replaced by 'carving' skis with more than 8mm sidecut.

So, the word 'carving' in this instance has absolutely zero relation to modern, current ski context. These skis are _not_ better suited for on-piste carving than current skis, they are most closely comparable to recreational GS skis.

Thanks you for making sense.

So would you say these skis were about 12 years old then? They only want £25 for them.

Cheers

NIKKIWHITE, "Carving" is getting a little long in the tooth as a description. (Almost) all skis will carve but the term orginated in the '90s when there was a general evolution from longer, skinnier skis that had less sidecut (for historical materials tech reasons) to shorter, wider skis with a more pronounced sidecut.

These are easier to carve and manufacturers started calling them "carvers". Carving is also used in some detuned race models. Not entirely sure why.

"Only a few years old" in that description is a little bit of a fib as I date them to at least 9 years ago...

NIKKIWHITE, that's £25 for a ski that you will have to pay airline fees on, quite probably have bindings readjusted on, possibly have sharpened and waxed, that will then be out classed on the mountain by just about every ski except the most basic beginner ones, that will be absolutely horrible in lessons, and with no resale value.

It might be a reasonable purchase for someone who already had middle-intermediate skiing skill in 1997 and who already owned boots and who didn't expect to fly to ski. <shrug> Very few peeps who fit that profile would be asking about those skis.

Darth Under, no way.

The 9X and 9S were head and shoulders better skis than the ones pictured; the only Rossi ones of the generation shown that were worth holding onto were the Cut 11.5s that became fat Bandit XXXs.

Those skis are rubbish and they should be paying you to take them away

I've a similar pair of skis in the attic. I'm near Stockport. If you can get up here or pay postage, you can have them (fora donation to Snowheads)

It's astonishing how people will buy complete old rubbish on Ebay, thinking they have to be getting a bargain. People on Snowheads regularly boast of selling skis on Ebay for more than they paid for them, having used them in the meantime. I had a friend who arrived here earlier this year having assured me that he did have "carving" skis - they were that sort of era, absolutely enormously long - way above his head. He dumped them on the terrace and used my Rossignol Attraxion Vs (163) and didn't try out his old skis till the last day of the holiday, when he couldn't wait to get them off after one run. He took them home, though - probably they're now on ebay. wink wink

comprex, I used to own some Rossi 9S T-Powers. They weighed a ton but were a superb (if unforgiving) ice and hardpack ski with an edge hold to which I would trust my body and soul in Scotland's worst frozen morning after overnight rain. Bloody lethal in the slush and crud though as they squirreled their wicked narrow little noses into the depths while I had ideas of steering them elsewhere. Laughing

I use eBay regularly, for buying and selling and it often astounds me that people pay good money for my leftovers. At the beginning of this ski season, i replaced all my old Decathlon ski socks (approx £5 for a twin pack) with nice, fancy Smartwool socks.

On a "free listing" day, thinking they wouldn't sell, i listed my old ski socks. I took pictures, listed them as "worn many times" and noted that they were bobbled from the washing machine. Each pair sold for more than I had originally paid for them. Confused, I checked in Decathlon incase ski socks prices had increased insanely. Nope, they were still a fiver for a twin pack. Someone could have paid less for the same item brand new.

magic_hat, pam w, some time ago someone paid more than £250 for a night's stay in the Travelodge in Slough, when, if they'd phoned the "hotel" themselves, they'd have paid £39...
