Sad, but not really news. This season there have been 19 avalanche deaths in France alone, which is about average. Strangely, it's not something the snowsports business is keen to advertise...
Last season, everyone who died in an avalanche in France was wearing a transciever.
I love my pow and it doesn't put me off, but I think it helps to have the facts to hand when accessing the the risk.

Can anyone (davidof?) confirm if this is true? It's possible I guess, but I would be extremely surprised given that most climbers and mountaineers for instance don't wear transceivers, and I don't think the figure for skiers is anywhere near 100% either...

It actually came from the pisthehors 'analysis of off-piste and backcountry avalanche accidents for france 2007-2008' though I mis-quoted a bit (from memory) as checking the report it actually says 'one thing to note, amongst the ski-fatalities every one of the victims was wearing a beacon', so there were probably some climbers, etc. who weren't.
I was just trying to make the points that:
- there are a lot more deaths than most people realise.
- wearing a beacon doesn't guarantee safety (though if you've got any sense you'll still always wear one).
