Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Deep powder, sunshine, couloirs, big GS turns, huge avalanche, kite skiing - just some highlights from a weekend trip a couple of weeks ago.

Snowhead tip for weekenders: it may add on a extra half hour to your travelling time but flying into Basle instead of Zurich can save ££.

Great pics. Pics 2,3 and 6 look like the Laub. #5 - is that the Steinberg?

Yeah, was there myself last week snowHead snowHead snowHead snowHead Mmmmhhh!! Nice!! Spent all week off-piste. Yummm. Had a minor epic on Day One when I twisted the left knee/ankle in an odd fall. Had to descend, on one leg, the mogul-filled black run from the Gletscherlift down to Stand. Ho! Interesting and not a little bit painful.

The snow was perfect and an additional few inches on Tuesday helped to perk it up. Some of my party did the Galtiberg - and got off-track and descended straight down the gully instead of trending off right across the snowfields. What an epic they had! Shocked Shocked

Great location for off-piste and would do it again one day. Laughing Laughing Laughing

....I was only watching and taking photos. Amazing speed these guys travel out - easily out run us - they only took air when they hit the flat at bottom of the Laub Shocked

Craghopper, were you with the SCGB party?...thought I saw the Rep at the Schwiezerhof on Saturday when we were having drinks there - we were going to tell him about the epic powder day we had the day before!

Yes, photos 2, 3 and 6 were on the Laub - the avalanche in photo 6 buried the top of the beginner slope Shocked

red 27, We flew easyjet, I think BA fly there as well. There is a frequent bus service that stops outside the railway station - takes 20 mins. Train to Engelberg takes 2 hours via Lucern. Easy.

red 27, Basle may be cheaper but you'll need to bus 20 min to the Banhof..... Change at Lucern for Engleberg and the journey is about 2.15..
Go to Zurich and the Banhof is underneath the airport. You can catch direct to Lucern for the change..or you will have to change at Zurich HBB, IIRC, so about the same time travel.

All in all, not much in it and the flight should dictate which airport you use, IMV.

Fishwins, JT, Thanks guys.... I love the train interchange at ZCH airport so may stick with that but it's worthwhile knowing there's a usable alternative

If you're driving, Basle is a little bit further but a much easier drive
The train is always a bit of a pain from Zurich because you have to wait 45mins at Lucerne for the transfer

Arno, that is more relevant then... the Basle link at Lucern is normally better timed for Engelberg..about 20mins IIRC...

Fishwins,

If you went a couple of weeks ago and the avalanche happened then, then it explains all of the crap semi-melted, frozen, re-melted, re-frozen builders rubble at the bottom of the Laub. It was a beautiful run down last week - until the last few hundred metres which were agonising. Wrecked my knees on Friday afternoon Shocked Shocked which were OK until then after a week of non-stop off-pisting. The knees are just about recovering now! after appreciable intake of Ibuprofen and Glucosamine each day! Very Happy Very Happy
