Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France to reintroduce border controls.

 Poster: A snowHead

From 'This French Life'

Quote:
The French authorities are to reintroduce border controls for two weeks ahead of a major NATO summit taking place next month.

From Friday, March 20 until April 5, France will ask travellers to present their passport or identity cards, as well as undertake visa checks, at its land and air borders.

In a statement the Immigration Ministry said the measures will be put in place at its border points with Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg.

The summit, which takes place on April 3 and 4, will see President Barack Obama and 27 other heads of state mark the 60th anniversary of NATO, at events held jointly in Strasbourg and the German cities of Kehl and Baden-Baden.

This may affect some of you flying into Geneva, Turin etc for skiing holidays in the coming couple of weeks. Those of us who normally drive to the Alps are used to it, so have your passports ready.

Last trip - SeaFrance Dover to Calais, into Belgium, Luxembourg, back into France, into Switzerland. On way home, parked at Les Crosets, skied to Avoriaz, skied back to Swizerland, drove into France - Luxembourg, Belgium, back into France again for SeaFrance home. Where did we show passports? Just the once at UK Immigration at Calais!

Helen Beaumont, Agree the offices do exist at Calais, on the autoroute into Belgium you have to slalom between derelict border control buildings, but between Luxembourg and France the only indication of the border is a roadsign beside the autoroute. Given how many border crossing points there, and how long they have been uncontrolled any temporary restriction will be no more than a token gesture.

RobinS, yes, don't they realise that Mr Terrorist probably already resides in France or would very easily bypass those borders - after all, France isn't fenced off in the way that say USA is fenced off from Mexico. This is just another stunt to make us fear the mainly imaginary threat.

RobinS, Bode Swiller, Helen Beaumont, The Austrians did this for the duration of the European Championships in 2008. They put Porta-cabins in the middle of the Autobahns where the buildings had been removed and coned you all down to one lane. It was a real pain in the proverbial for people like me who cross every day. We risked it and used back roads instead where there were some police cars stopping vehicles more or less at random. If you had local plates they didn't bother.

They did this to stop known hooligans travelling, but as England had been knocked out they almost decided to relax the rules until someone reminded them that the Dutch, Poles and Russian fans are way worse. Every passport was checked against a list of known hooligans provided by Europol, I saw one bus load being "escorted" off the autobahn and handed back to the German police, who them apparently were responsible for escorting them out of Germany. The jams on the A93 from Rosenheim to Kufstein were horrendous.

We also have a "controlled zone" around Munich every January/February for a long weekend when the top security chiefs from NATO and other groups all meet up there for some special meeting. Random checks on everyone in or around that area, especially if you have foreign plates. You should have seen the security measures for the conference after the Iraq invasion in 2003. Rumsfeld was attending so every protest group in Europe wanted to be there.

I suspect the threat is real. Sad
The only imaginary element will be the protection that this imposition gives.

No evidence passing Geneva-Annemasse or FR-CH Col du Forclaz Friday night, nor on return trip tonight. Pretty congested on the A40 though and what was it with all the crappy driving? Way worse than usual.
