Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Helmets?

OK,I have my can opener and I have my can of worms...
The wife and I are toying with buying our first helmets, and was wondering which brands to avoid. Seen Smith ones in nevisport for £46 (vents and detachable ear pads) any good?
My wife fancies a white leather one, RED I think, again any good?

davef, There aren't really any to avoid.

There are relevant standards, and all the ones on retail sale will meet those standards.

It is then down only to which ones you are comfortable with (and which ones you can afford probably).

And as with most things, what one person finds comfortable is little guidance as to what another will find comfortable.

Bought some in Ski Republic in Les Menuires. Their 2 for 1 offer made them good value. Mainly Red and CIBE in stock. 2 helmets €90. Good value. You got to try helmets on before you buy. Well I do maybe I have a funny head.

In a certain sense they're kind of like ski boots. Doesn't matter what helmet you have so long as it fits properly. As others have stated all helmets have to meet certain minimum requirements after that it comes down to fit, style, weight & colour. Once you have the fit right the rest is up to you.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Fit is everything. A poor fitting helmet will be ineffective and uncomfortable. So you need to go to a good shop and try a load of them on. Smith and RED should be fine IF they fit well. Other good brands to try are Giro, Dainese, Sweet.

I recently ordered a Rucanor one, reduced from £39.99 to £24.99

They also sell Rossignol ski helmets for £39.99, and have a promo on for free postage on ski helmets at the moment (wasn't available when I purchased mine, but delivery was very quick)

As uktrailmonster, points out fit is everything. Fit is, however easier to achieve if the thing is adjustable. Some of the Smiths and the Giros have an adjustable band in the back of the helmet. The Sweets have fit pads that stick to the inside of the helmet and take up excess space. Look at the venting as well. Some, notably the Sweets and the Dainese have much less venting than comparable lids or in some cases none at all.

I bought mine when a mate offered the advice "if your thinking about buying one, thens the time to buy one", I think he was right, a few days later I took a big tumble summersaulting head first, I am sure that I would have been blood waggoned down the hill if I had not been wearing the helmet. Julbo in this case.
