Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

the problem is the vastly inflated airport costs/reduced routes from up North this year getting there in order to use the train and bus!!

DB, Tell me about it Twisted Evil I have to fight the Cloggies and their bloody caravans on my way home from work every night! This week is the last of the quiet weeks on the motorways until after Easter! And a large percentage do not have suitable tyres on either their cars or their caravans - hence the pile ups on the Irschenberg at annoyingly frequent intervals

Mind you if you want a quiet holiday somewhere, the Netherlands will be empty for the rest of the winter! Laughing

Stanton, I believe it is 'bean counters'. Not sure what that has to do with this thread!
I'm also not sure how you qualify to comment on winter tyres, chains or anything to do with driving in the modern world!
Just you stick to the train and the bicycle. Laughing

Well, reading all this has got me thinking and I've changed my mind. I was quite happy to drive to Austria this christmas on my normal 4x4 tyres and carry chains (just like I normally do). But their law is indeed murky and it simply isn't worth the uneasy feeling you get knowing that your tyres might not be up to the job... and, worse, if someone does prang me and I get blamed for having the wrong boots on (tyre man speak). My tyres will need changing in about 5000 miles anyway so I've just bitten the bullet and ordered me a nice set of Vredestein Wintrac 4xtreme XL. I'll keep the old ones in the back of the garage where they will eventually decompose in the year 3000.

Incidently, if you are considering the same and think best price is online... I tried mytyres.com and they appear to be in Germany. Price £150 each delivered but not including fitting. Called my local tyre man (ironically just to ask him what his fitting charge would be)... he quoted £134 each tyre including fitting, a free glimpse of the page 3 calendar 1998 and a nice muddy cup of tea to boot. So a healthy saving by going local.

Anyway, as of next week I'll be properly equipped, "legal" and also ready for the quarter inch of slush the wicked Home Counties weather will throw at me one day this winter.

Update... I'm all Vredesteined-up. A fully fledged winter tyre snob. Have to say that the car feels very different - steering feels slightly heavier, much grippier and generally more planted on the road. OK so it's +10 and roads are only damp but can tell already that the difference on the icy slippery stuff will be vast.

Bode Swiller, actually, it was a treat. I don't go skiing - but walking was delightful.

Hi,

Despite the fact of the winter tires be or not mandatory in Austria. I would say - if you are going there, in Winter - use winter tires.

We were headed to Neustift, Febuary/2008 and experience some very cold days and with a rented car, without WT, we've got involved in a car crash, on the little road from Neustif to Stubai.

The problem is not the snow, they do a great job to maintain the road clear, actually . But a thin layer of ice on the road that you'll not see and before, you can be noticed, you'll be slippery with no control.

One day of ski left and a lot of headache with Hertz !!! Twisted Evil
