Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
We're off to Val Thorens at Easter and was wondering if anyone knows if you can ski over to La Tania and back again in a day, or should we only go as far as Meribel?? We've purchased a 3V lift pass so want to see as much of it as possible, but just a bit worried we won't make it back to VT by the end of the day.

la tania's pretty low down from what i remember, might be a little on the sketchy side depending on snow.
should be doable though, depending on how well you ski. you can even make it to courchevel and back in a day if that's of interest.
you'll have stacks of skiing to do with val thoren and meribel though, and meribel is lovely (not that val thoren is horrible) - you'll have a great time!

La Tania is 1300m approx, and has 3 runs down (red blue and green) that are all snow cannoned so Im not sure how much of a problem there will be for snow.

Easily.. as long as you don't leave it until 13:00 to start out or 15:30 to head back... and don't go down the blue Ours on the way there... its flat in places... go back up Plan de main, then Pas du Lac
But also make sure you do the Jérusalem to St Martin D B. and Combe du Vallon and Combe Tougnette , oh and Choucas (my favourite blue) , and... but perhaps not all in the same day

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

La Tania is north facing, I have been able to ski down to it right up to closing day over the past few years so far.
The skiing in the Courchevel bowl is some of the nicest in the area IMHO.
regards,
Greg

Great, thanks for all the advice. I didn't think about the snow conditions with La Tania being so low, but it sounds like there's lots of other great places to ski to.

Agree with Wayne C - easily doable.
Definitely head for the Plan De Main chair on your way down to Mottaret - Ours is a horrible flat path (I'm a boarder).
Think 15:30 is a bit too late - but depends where you'd be at that point.
May make sense to head back via Saulire and drop straight down into Mottaret.
Jerusalem is a gem of a run (as is Combe du Vallon and Campagnoles).
Don't forget to drop into the Orelle valley ...
Off to Val d'Isere in 3 weeks - can't wait.
Enjoy

skili2, Plenty of available runs in that area. For La Tania you really need to get some local advice about the conditions at the time. Take a view on the snow in the Val Thorens valley as you pass ST Martin and Les Menuires, it should give you a pretty good indication of the general lower conditions. Most of these resorts have snow cannons on the main runs but it could still be a slush fest when you get lower down or icy early on in the day. I'm there at the same time but looks like we'll only have a VT pass.

You'll have no problem getting to La Tania and back from VT. WayneC, is spot on to say just don't leave it too late in the day to set off.

No problem as long as you keep moving. The year the Orelle gondola opened we skied from Orelle to Courchevel and back in a day - and the lifts are faster now.

We always do a La Tania day when we stay in Val Thorens. (Conditions were excellent last week by the way).
It's easy to do in a day with a relaxed lunch at Pub le Ski Lodge. If you get early on the Plein Sud to avoid the morning rush you will have time to take in some of the nicer runs like the Creux from Saulire rather than just going the most direct route to La Tania. Enjoy, it's a good day out.
Plans de Main advice above is crucial.
If for some unforseen reason you do struggle to make it back, make sure at least you get into the Belleville valley.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You should have no trouble making it to la tania and back in a day, in january a friend and I were making it over there and back via indirect routes and making it back for a 1 o'clock lunch with people who only had a val thorens pass. IMO the skiing in courchevel is the best of the 3 valleys, the red and black runs and bits of off piste off vizelle and sualire are truly stunning and it is well worth going over early for.
From the top of the courchevel valley it is only 2 lifts (plattiers and cote brune) and a couple of runs back into the val thorens and les menuires valley. It takes nowhere near as long as everyone thinks and the later you leave it the shorter the queues will be as everyone else starts to go back at 3:30ish.

We did La Tania to VT in the day easily last week. On the way back I'd agree go via Saulire but dropping down into Mottaret avoid Nivorelle and use Marcassin. On the way back to avoid going into Courchevel centre to get the bubble up to Vizelle/ Saulire use the drag Source.
I'd agree the skiing in Corchevel/ La Tania was brilliant last week.

You know it makes sense.

We did it this year from les Menuires (same distance) with a nervous 4 weeker! Stopped for leisurely lunch as well. Only problem we had was bubble from Motteret, had to queue for 30 mins +.

skili2, It depends your ski level and the conditions. If you are skiing red runs easy it will be nice to go to La Tania, having lunch in Courchevel & then go back to Val Thorens. It's long of course but you have nice and wide runs ; just be care at the end of the day because the conditions are not so good (more bumpy or icy) maybe slushy snow for Easter from the intermediate stations to the buttoms.
If you can ski to Courchevel or La Tania when the weather is beautiful, you'll have a fantastic vue from top of Saulire, Mont de la Chambre, Top of Tougnette, ... I wish you a very nice week in Val Thorens.
