Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How do you know when you are good at snowboarding/or need more lessons?

I know this sounds a bit of a daft question, but let me give you my senario............................ On holiday in Soll this year, we paid for my son who is 14 to have a private one to one with a lovely German boarder from the ski school in resort. So off he goes, 2 hours later we were waiting at the pick up area and he glides past effortlessly whilst we looked on with our mouths open!

His instructor said he did well, could master turns and needed to practice (in so many words). He stayed on the board for the rest of the afternoon and without wanting to sound like a proud parent, looked like he had been born on it. Don't get me wrong he did some falling (mostly off lifts) but came down some challenging red runs with ease. In fact he inspired some members of our group who said they would definately give it a go next yr.

What I'm asking is, do you think he will need more lessons or do you just teach yourself when on it for a week. Do you get taught to get off lifts without ending up wiping everyone out in front of you?
Any suggestions will be welcome Little Angel

Once you are linking turns the best thing you can do is simply practice. Getting off lifts is all about learning to ride with one foot in and one foot out of the bindings. But there is bit of a technique of setting yourself sideways on the edge of the seat with the board pointing forwards and firmly getting the board on the floor as the chair lift reaches the floor, getting the rear foot on the board, holding on to the front of the seat with your rear hand and use the seat to balance as the chair pushes you off as you leave it and stoop low and ride it out. Your lad done good Wink

Zobo, I'm not a snowboarder, but I think my comments apply generally to all ways of sliding down snow. With a good instructor you will always benefit from having lessons, although the law of diminishing returns generally applies (the better you get, the more effort is required to make small improvements). The danger of 'teaching yourself' is that you can develop bad habits which aren't a problem on relatively easy slope or good snow conditions, but as soon as things get trickier your technique can be found lacking. On the downside lessons aren't cheap and they can get in the way of other plans you have to board or ski with family and friends. Only you/your son can decide what the right mix of lessons and free boarding/skiing is right for you/him.

The best way to improve is to ride drag lifts. It's the only time you can really practice riding with one foot out of the binding. Once you're confident doing that you'll be much more confident getting off chairs. A long weekend up in Scotland a few years ago did wonders for my ability to ride with 1 foot out.

Lager, I'm not a boarder, but is that something that could be practised at a snowdome? Looks like Zobo would be well placed to take his son for a little 'homework'. snowHead

Lager, Good tip thanks, had to laugh at my sons attempt at the drag lift, ended up clinging on whilst being dragged on his butt

At indoor slopes I'd advise the lad just to enjoy what he can do, watch other boarders carving and speak to them. Most boarders are happy to pass on tips, be it getting on/off lifts, first steps of ollieing, riding fakie, etc. However when you head abroad if he's no-one to board and progress with a bit more tuition prob would'nt go a miss!

Manchesters drag lifts are uber slow and he'd prob master it in one visit...it'll be a shock when he meets a fast one though! Twisted Evil

I always try where possible to ride any flat bits around the lifts with one foot in/out as a bit of practice - I find that being dragged in a straight line on a drag lift is not really the same as generally riding down a slope etc, but for sure it is also worth practicing Very Happy

Blacks? Off piste? Park? Halfpipe? Boardercross?

It he can do all these with control and style and finess, then maybe lessons aren't appropriate any more. Of course, finding a resort which can cater for this level is not easy.

RobW, I think we're being a bit premature here, he only did a day and a half at the end of our holiday thats including his lesson.
He did venture slightly off piste when he realised he could do and stay up!!!

If we had encountered a Halfpipe, he would of been on that too, but as a mum I'm sure I would of had my eyes shut. I know he has a lot to learn, these things we would of come accross in time.....I'm thinking he would quite like a ski school (for boarders of course) where he can be with like minded people and learn jumps etc. He was more than happy to board alongside us oldies for the remainder of his holiday whilst he practised, but thats not going to last Toofy Grin

Jonny luv plums, Whatever they are? I'm very new to all this. That would be a dream, he's not an academic kid and struggles with school, this is the first time me and his dad have seen him persevere, make it look easy, and enjoy the challenge. We were made up with him Very Happy

Zobo, 1080 airs, there are 4 ways to spin. I cant do them. That is all Smile

Get him into a snowdome and turn him into a jib monkey. I noticed a lot of uk riders, while they suck on a real mountain are way better than me in a park.

here's my advice, which doesnt count for much. Find out if the freestyle interests him, or the high speed carve thing, or the freeride. Figure that out and buy him the relevant set up. Not really advice but I would like that if I was 14 Smile
Skiing should be avoided at all costs, if I do hear he has been skiing I will call esther rantzem, mark my words. wink

Jonny luv plums, You'd better get on the phone, he has been skiing since he was 7, which he loved........who wouldn't?

What is the relevant set up? no shampoo or shower gel for a month, jeans that show his bum crack ?..................... On the plus side, the damn ability to look cool and totally show us up with his moves (god, i really do sound like my own mother!).

Will definately need to do some research into this whole snowboarding business, son would be happy to board in pj's, albeit a bit nippy! snowHead

If he was the given the opportunity to develop the basics and as suggested at a local snowdome do a jib session in time, he will love it. Any kid that can handle kickers and impress with the tricks will love it - particularly young boys to impress the girls. Deep down we all like to show off.
