Factually correct but you could also word it as 'the first & last Scot to win Wimbledon . . . . ever'

@Haggis_Trap, nice one - I'm classing that as one lost at the net - touche! However I'm sure Jamie being the less emotional / poorer of the two would have taken lessons - if he isn't already an accomplished skier already . . .

@Belch, there's no hard and fast rule, but I think "win Wimbledon" means winning the singles to most people, as that's by far the most prestigious event. No-one devotes their teenage years to becoming a pro tennis player to win the mixed doubles. Everyone who starts on that routes wants to be successful at singles, veering into doubles as a sensible career option when it becomes obvious that success at singles isn't going to happen. Ref Wimbledon last year when Emma R ditched Sir Andy in the mixed doubles to focus on her upcoming singles match.
And I don't think many casual fans go to Wimbledon to watch specific doubles matches (other than celebrity mixed doubles pairings such as Graf/McEnroe and Radacanu/Murray). They go to see the big names, who have made their name big via singles.
The line has to be drawn somewhere as to what "win Wimbledon" means. In extremis, one could say that Ivan Lendl won Wimbledon and really go rogue and say that Laura Robson did, on the back of their wins in the boys and girls events.
On a lighter note, I do miss the "Peak Murray" period when, per some sections of the media, the heroic Brit could win the semi final, before the useless Scot lost in the final.

@Haggis_Trap, Sir Andy won't appeal to the "English Nationalist" set because he's both intelligent and articulate. And obviously being extremely rich on the back of being successful (if not the very best) would also have counted against him.
The stuff here about whether he's Scottish or British etc. is an ironic take on the moronic stuff that has been written / said serious about him in the past.

You are, unfortunately, right. Some people don't seem to understand the difference between Great Britain and England. Andy being a proud Scot doesn't make him any less British.

I know this is a daft debate but I suspect PL footballers are pretty adept at striking a ball and it wouldn't take them long to pick up rugby kicking skills. Forbearance and resilience under pressure and contact maybe less so.

Have you seen how poor they are at taking corner kicks, or how many have poor technicque stricking a moving ball on the edge of the box - leaning back and ballooning it over the bar?
Compare that with a pin point cross field kick on the move....

You're comparing events that don't happen with anything like the same frequency in a game. And you remember the perfect pin point kicks and forget all those that ran to the opposition or into touch. I'm not denying that there are players like Dupont who have mind blowing skills but so do the top pass distributors in football.
Point is they are different games and claiming any objective superiority of one over another is just an daft bar room debate.

lol - so easy to go fishing on here . . .
But in all seriousness - 'Pin point' - that is hilarious. To compare a ruby players one directional kicking ability (the basic equivalent of a goalkeepers 'ping' in football) to nowhere other than either a massive touchline and or a lucky bounce to a player running into space compared to the massive variation of striking / passing / chipping / pinging a footballer is doing in multiple directions under pressure and throughout the entire game is totally different gravy . . .
Anyway back to Murraymint - hes still tight and needs lessons

If you want to see ball control go to a premier league game and watch the players warming up before the match , what they can do with a football is absolutely amazing.

Their close ball skills are superb, it is true, but the quality of corner taking and shooting from the edge of the box is shockingly poor.

I think you need to watch some rugby before posting such a comment! Have you never seen a crossfield kick pass?
Go watch Finn Russell, Fin Smith, Marcus Smith as a start.

What a crazy comment. If you think anything the players in the premier league do is "shockingly poor", you obviously know nothing. They're the best in the world at it. How can you say they are shockingly poor? Have you ever played football against anyone half decent? It's a humbling experience.
Anyone can float a corner into the 6 year box, but it'll be easy for the keeper to catch or a defender to clear. The reason so many corners look "shockingly poor" is they're trying to achieve a level of whip that mere mortals could only dream of.

@dode, Can't afford Stone Island now my crack dealing days are over - Arcteryx all the way!
@JDL65, I went to a Rugby playing school; Nick Beal was in my maths class and a certain Matt Dawson was the year below me - its not that I dislike Rugby as a sport to watch; I enjoy it. . .its just that I much prefer football as a game and know that the skills required are significant to play at the upper levels; its not called the beautiful game for nothing . . .

Top flight footie players are generally fantastic athletes. As a lad outside of North America (and maybe Australasia) if you have sporting ability, you will gravitate to football because that's where the money is.
And I think the apparent lack of resilience under pressure etc. is simply gamesmanship. When the pressure is on e.g. penalty shootouts, the players generally perform to a very high standard.
