Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Finland stages an art show of snow and ice

The stuff we slide on is becoming an increasingly fashionable medium for artists.

This piece from today's New York Times describes an unusual ice and snow art show in Finland which has attracted leading sculptors, architects, and 'ice engineers'. Not to mention lighting technicians, as demonstrated in the stunning photo.

Wouldn't it be nice to see more illuminated ice and snow art around the mountains? It must be quite a sight at night.

I would enjoy that, must be quite something lit up at night.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Saas Fee have an ice sculpture show running throughout this season; they are scattered throughout the village - my favourite was the "ice cow".

There are a number of sculpture trails around the UK and most that I have seen get consist of art which is very sympathetic to the local surroundings, some you have to look at quite carefully to see that they're not natural!

I recently got back from Quebec City, where they were celebrating the 50th year of their Winter Carnival, which is probably the biggest such winter festival in the world. The mascot, "Bonhomme Carneval" (a snowman) has his own ice palace opposite the Quebec Parliament buildings, and there are masses of snow and ice sculptures made by artists from around the world on display on the Plains of Abraham (as history buffs will know this was where General Wolfe beat the French!)
The english ice sculpture was quite amusing. It showed a fisherman in a small boat containing some small fish he had caught, but behind him there was a huge fish with open mouth coming up behind his boat. It was entitled "Look Behind You!" Very Happy
