Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Melt-down and wash-down for some US resorts in the NW

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Some ski resorts in Washington State (north-western USA) have experienced a killer combination of warm winds and torrential rain, washing away their snow and leading to a suspension of operations. Hardest hit was Stevens Pass, which suffered 7 inches of rain in 36 hours...

This report from Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Stevens Pass is having a roller-coaster winter. Only recently we reported a 5-inch rainstorm on the mountain, which washed away their previous snowcover! See this snowHeads thread.

Yesterday all CMH lodges were grounded due to high avalanche risk, high temperatures and rain

Whistler-Blackcomb has had a miserable week too, with heavy rain affecting the World Snowboard Championships, though I think the freezing level has risen again.

This kind of weather, from the mild Pacific, is apparently known as the 'Pineapple Express' - which must be great for the sale of pineapples!

My wife is in Fernie for the season - it hasn't stopped raining there since Tuesday, and the mountain is a mess.

Well it's stopped raining - for now (more due at the weekend! rolling eyes Sad ).
Apparently this time it was a 'Tropical Punch' because it was warmer wetter tropical air than a 'pineapple express', unusual for January.

Fotunately the really cold snap preceding the tropical punch meant that snowmaking was in full swing so there is still some snow low down (the reservoirs were looking a bit empty - I suspect they are brimming again now!!)
Well at least we get to see more of the Flora of Whistler/Blackcomb!!

This thread on EpicSki.com (go to pages 3+4) contains a lot of comment on the rain situation in the Pacific North-West. They really have been having a time of it.

But, meanwhile, crossing the continent, Chicago is experiencing its heaviest snows since 2002. This report from Chicago Tribune. Snowstorms are hitting Boston and New York City too.

Such a shame. There is a round of the freestyle world cup in Fernie this weekend. They're going ahead with it, but it's going to be pretty dismal.

... It's one week since this thread reported the rain-damaged skiing in Washington State, and all ski resorts near Seattle have now shut down. This is thought to be almost unprecedented in January.
