Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St Gervais

Anyone know what this place is like? we have the chance of a very good deal here 14 March for a week. I'm worried about two things....height and something to do at night. We are not wild party animals but want somewhere to go for a few beer and live music, what's the likelihood? also, how far is megeve by road? we will have a car but is there a bus? what time does it run to? any help please.

St Gervais is not a highspot for nightlife, but has a few bars, a night club and a live music venue (Yucatan). Height is not a problem, especially this year. Megeve is about 4 km by road, but very few buses (perhaps three a day and none at night).

andyjc, Where is the place you are looking at? I have just had 18+ clients at the residence we use for half term, with glowing reports for the conditions, resort and accommodation, and have just booked another couple for a month from 14/3. We were there for our summer holidays last year and loved it - nice village with (as beequin, says, some bars etc and some nice buzzy restaurants. It's not Ibiza, but a real town with a good atmosphere. You'll love it (unless you are looking for Ibiza... wink )

Anniepen, Hi, Its le grande panaroma, near the gondola. Ok...what about Chamonix, how far is it by road? are there buses at night? what about the different passes? what pass would i need to ski the whole area including les houches? our only problem is we have 3 experienced skiers and one beginner! Like i say we are not party animals as we are all in our 40's but we all still love a beer and a live band and socializing in general i suppose. Def' not looking for Ibiza!

andyjc, Chamonix is a bit of a trek but you should have a great time in the St Gervais and Megeve area. Good restaurants and bars and if the snow is good even better. Stopped in Megeve April time years ago on the way back from Verbier and the snow was better there than it was in Verbier. Enjoy: snowHead

There is a casino in Le Fayet too, which is where you could get the train to Chamonix.
pam w, You are right, it should have read 14 km (though Google Maps says 11).

Does anyone know about local transport? do buses run to Chamonix,Megeve and Les Contamines? if so are they during the day or at night as well? would we be better of with a car?

St Gervais is great, and definitely lively enough at night for most. Very French, pretty, quite low-key and friendly. This year would be ideal to do it, plenty of snow. If you fancied a day in Chamonix I think you'd want a car - unless there's a regular shuttle between St Gervais and Le Fayet? I'd be quite interested to know this, too.

Doesn't St Gervais link to Megeve and Les Houches anyway though?

Two villages..St Gevais and St Gervais Le feyette.

You can get to Le Houches via the cog railway but the way back is off-piste so you'll have to come down by train, I suspect.
Le Feyette to a Chamonix ski area...would take an hour at least on the train, I think..and that would be Brevent.

Whenever I stayed in Le Feyette we used a car to get to Le Contamine within 30 mins and just a little longer for Chamonix.

Never found much to do at night aprt from the Terminus in Le Feyette which is where Snowcoach have a presence. St Gervias looks a little busier but can't be specific as these places tend to have seasonal favourites which change from year to year, IME.

Well, ive booked it now. 8/9 berth digs with sauna, pool etc for 225 quid, next to the gondola. 75 quid with easy jet, this is amazingly cheap so far. Now I've just got to find out whether to rent a car from Geneva or get private transport. It all depends on the public transport in the resorts. I think i will call their tourist board.

That's an amazing deal!

I'd definitely get a car though.

btw there is a very nice Morroccan restaurant in Le Fayet, on the corner opposite the Terminus bar. Good food, not expensive and friendly. Nice veggie options on request.

Ah, I see, cheers. We got stranded once when the lifts at Les Houches shut while we were in the woods, and had to get back down to St Gervais for a very expensive taxi ride home. I seem to remember it was absolutely fine but very worrying at the time of course!

andyjc, snow can often be a little better at Les Contamines, a nice ski area 10 mins up the valley from St Gervais, if you get the Evasion lift pass it's included:

http://www.lescontamines.net/index.html

We stayed in Contamines but skied 1 day in St Gervais, beautiful area, amazing views of Mont Blanc, town is sort of faded elegance and traffic is quite busy though. Megeve is nicer to stroll around as it's pedestrianised.

andyjc, Le Panorama is a good spot - as it says, right by the Gondola. There is a bar just across the road - It used to be the Yucatan now I think it's the OBoose. Pretty sure they do live music. It's a bit more of a walk into town but not far. As has been said already it's not full of wild night life but there are a couple of places. The bar next to L'Eterle pizza place has free wifi and televises most big matches of most descriptions. The Pur Bar is quite nice and stays open til the wee small hours, but not a live music venue as such.

The bus from GVA runs to Le Fayet at 08.00, 11.15 14.00 16.30 19.00 and 19.45 The journey takes about an hour - the early bus a little longer as it doubles as a school bus too.

The bus from Le Fayet to St Gervais runs at 09.35 12.50 15.40 17.45 (Those are just the ones that make any sense for connections.

The return fare is 52 euros to Le Fayet and about 5 to St Gervais.

Forget evening public transport anywhere! It's non-existant after 7pm.

Les Houches is not included on the Mont Evasion pass - and neither is the tramway, which is 18.50 euro return. (it's a nice little area over there though)

The ski bus is free in St Gervais. Getting to Megeve,(lift linked) and Combloux/La Giettaz (navette from Princess lift)is easy - but timing is critical
There are 9 buses a day to Les Contamines.

Getting to Chamonix involves either the daily am and pm return bus or getting the bus from St Gervais to Le Fayet and the train on to Chamonix. Justunder an hour if you time it right.

There is a pass that covers Chamonix, les houches, Mont Evasion and probably Courmayeur as well but it ain't cheap! You've got 450km on Mont Evasion - should keep most people busy for a week I would think! I'd get that for maybe 5 days and then if you're desperate to go to Chamonix or anywhere else you can get a day pass.

Anything else? Little Angel

Annie, As I start to plan our trip, can you tell me where to go shopping? any decent supermarkets (normal priced) in resort or should we go somewhere on the way down? we've got a chef in the party and he's agreed to cook for his beer/wine.

andyjc, Intermarche as you leave the A40 motorway in Le Fayet is the best bet, although there is a Carrefour in Sallanches. I like to use the butcher in St Gervais and top up in the small Casino or Sherpa in the town centre.

Hi all,

andyjc; where did you get the lift pass discount? I'm heading to les contamines at the start of april and wasn't going to visit the other resorts due to the price but £145 for an evasion lift pass is good value.
