Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Apologies if it's been done already.
Does anyone know what the picture is if someone enters the Schengen area before 31 Dec and then stays afterwards? Gov.uk says the days before 31 Dec don't count but after that the 90-day clock starts running. Is that definitely the case or is that another unanswered question?
If so, how anal are the various authorities likely to be?

On 31st of December you are treated as an EU citizen with free
movement
rights. From 1st January you are a tourist from outside the EU, so you get 90 days from then.
Here in Switzerland the authorities have never been remotely bothered about the 90 days (it has always been 90 days here as CH is non-EU). Who knows whether that will change - I would guess it won't in the short-term.

The current rules apply until 23:59 on 31.12.20. New ones from 00:00 on 01.01.21. Your 90 day clock starts from that moment. This has already been settled. As to how strictly
the rules
will be enforced, no one can say (though perhaps not so much initially) and it will vary from place to place. If you are asking, "can I go to ski resort x on 28.12.20 and plan to stay until the end of the ski season" the answer is almost certainly yes simply because no one is likely to take much notice. You might have an issue on leaving Schengen (yes your passport will be scanned out) if you have run over the 90 days without sorting a visa and then have an issue in the future when you re-enter Schengen, the same as any place where similar rules apply.

Unfortunately you can't apply for a precautionary tourist visa as a UK citizen yet. You will have to wait until after 1 Jan or when the application process system has been changed (whichever is later) to do so. The good news is it is only about £40 all in. France has always been lenient towards people from the US, Australia etc. compared to say, Spain, but that is no guarantee that it will look favourably upon the British in the same circumstances.
