Hi,
Have just returned from a great 4 days skiing in Morzine and thought I would start planning for next year!
The children found the whole ski bus/schlep in boots tricky, so can anyone recommend a nice resort or hotel in Europe that is ski to door.
We need to be less than 1 1/2 hours from the airport, and need a range of blue and red runs, (some decent blacks would be nice) and are a mixed group of adults and children, skiers and boarders.
We are open to suggestions regarding country, but preferably not Bulgaria!
Thanks

kyoto49, Flaine; very close to Geneva. But you need to check on the exact location of your apartment.

kyoto49,
You could try the same area and go to Avoriaz for door to door though I don't know if there are any decent hotels and it's 'niceness' is very much in the eye of the beholder.
Most of the classic skiing door to door resorts are purpose built and not that 'nice'. (Obertauern although not ugly has not got great charm see Richmonds report). For lack of lugging the best thing to do if you don't want to go purpose built is often to find a few candidate resorts and write to the tourist office requesting info and they will usually be able to send a map of the resort with the accomodation on it so you can see how close it is to the main lifts.
Failing that Zauchensee will meet some of your criteria and although purpose built and not 'charming ' is not unattractive.

kyoto49, the Crystal Club Hotel Le Totem in Flaine.
Didn't stay there this year as was on a lads break, but seriously considering taking the wife and kids there next year. Just off the slopes, skating and large area right outside for playing, and near all the bars and restaurants etc.

andyph, We went to Morzine last week and had a great time, loads of sun and masses of powder, however, we did ski most if not all of the blues, at Pleney/les Gets Ardent and Avoriaz so might need a different place next time. Morzine did tick all the boxes tho, so we need something similar.

...so that just leaves the rest of Les Gets, Chatel, Les Crosets, Champery, Champoussin, Torgon, Morgins... no pleasing some people

kyoto49, My brother and his family have an apartment in Morillon and real ski in, ski out was one of the main considerations. prettier than Flaine but with access to their skiing - very short trip to airport.

You don't have to have skiinskioutski to avoid aggro; loads of resorts have ski and boot lockers at or very near the main lifts, provided by the lift co and/or hire shops; StAnton and Kitzbuhel for a start. If you're wearing ordinary boots, many more hotels come into walking range. It means you have to start at the same place each day unless you plan ahead, but you do with skiinskioutski.

also another way is to go to a chalet that drives you to & from the slopes.......

kyoto49, depending on your budget - Oberlech - not cheap, but fantastic and Obergurgl - Obergurgl is about 1:30 from Innsbruck, great skiing for kids, esp over in Hockgurgl. Alpenland in Obergurgl is pretty nice and literally ski in ski out.

I sympathise with the need to have slopes very near to where kids are staying - and to be able to "pop home" for a drink, or a rest, when they need it and not at some pre-arranged hour. Les Saisies might fit the bill, though kids would either need to be able to cope with mainly French group lessons or have (very good value) private lessons. It's 1.5 hours from Geneva. Not that many black runs, but 185kms of mainly blues and reds.

kyoto49,
Agree with all above but if Morzine ticks all your other required boxes and depending on the kids' ages and all of your abilities, why not stick with it? I have no vested interest in the place and indeed, although I've spent many summers there and in the surrounding area, we've only had one ski hol there. Where were you staying? Were you a little out of town? The many decent and family run hotels in and around the Rue de Teleriphique (sp?) are so close to the Pleney. There are apartments near and at the bottom of the Pleney run and damn middle age, I can't remember the names of the hotels/companies concerned. I know the two main lifts are at opposite ends of the town and serve different areas but if you are set on exploring further, what about a hire car, if money is not an option? Or splashing out on a taxi for when you want to go across town? When mine were young we always went to Austria but with the hindsight knowledge I now have of Morzine, I would have spent a lot more time there. Lovely town, people, great skiing and everywhere, including the many good restaurants, are so child friendly. Plus the ice hockey rink when the local team is playing (Thurdays I think) is a thrilling and cheap night out, especially for youngsters. My small opinion is that the lack of ski in and out is heavily outweighed by the plus factors of this place.

Montgenevre is just over 1 1/2 hours from Turin, and some apts and chalets are ski in ski out there
i believe the road that used to through the village now goes underneath so all the bars cafes are rignt next to the nursery slopes and lifts

I reckon Alpe D'Huez fits the bill providing you choose the right accommodation. About 1.5 hours from Grenoble Airport by car, a little longer by bus.

SnowGod, I like that suggestion!
Thanks to everyone who has replied, you suggestions are appreciated. We did have a hire car this year, but the traffic around the lifts was carnage so we walked! We were 10 mins slow walk to the Super Morzine lift. We all really enjoyed Morzine, although personally I preferred the Avoriaz side. I must admit to enjoying new places and countries though hence the request. We have been to Kitzbuhel, and enjoyed skiing there, stayed near to the lifts, so maybe thats a solution to look at.
Unfortunately we have a couple of good skiiers in the party so we need a decent amount of terrain, which does elimiate some of the smaller french/austrian resorts.
Thanks again for the suggestions, they are much appreciated
