Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Australian expert in GPS skier-tracking mysteriously disappears in Japanese resort

 Poster: A snowHead

Scott McKay, a 27-year-old skier from Brisbane in Australia who worked on the development of a GPS tracking system for skiers, has mysteriously disappeared in the Japanese ski resort of Niseko.

McKay was last seen last Friday evening, drinking at a bar in the resort. He failed to return to his accommodation, which was only ten minutes' walk from there. Little snow fell on the night he disappeared but there have been substantial falls since then.

This report from Brisbane Times.

Quote:
Former colleagues say it is unlikely Scott McKay was wearing one of the Flaik transmitters ... He joined Snow Sports Interactive in late 2005 to work on the Flaik project, testing it at ski resorts in North America, before returning to Brisbane in March 2007 ... The GPS tags are not available in Japan and it is unlikely he had been wearing one at the time, his former boss told brisbanetimes.com.au yesterday.

Ben Johnston, a friend of Scott McKay who was with him in Niseko and has helped initiate a search, began this thread on the SnowJapan forum to appeal for sightings, but hopes for his discovery are fading:

Some people - not messages remaining here I might add - seem to see this worrying story as an excuse/opportunity to spam post links to their websites (of no value to the subject at hand) and get some publicity through that.
It's not, and it's extremely annoying.
Rather than angling for some exposure and personal gain, why not put your efforts into trying to help with all this?
That would seem to be the decent thing to do.

Wonder if he is talking about us.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

A local website in Niseko has a detailed update on this man's disappearance, which is proving to be a formidable mystery:

I don't see how I could possibly help, and by posting the link you are reminding people that it's surprisingly easy to get lost on a short walk in a ski resort, if the weather comes in.

Especially if you've had a few (not that I'm implying that he was drunk, I have no idea...but it does happen).

I hope they find him :/

edit - Oh I see, I think he means posting links in the comments, which is pretty bad, I agree.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It seems the opposite was the case. Quoting the above link:

Officer Begley [Niseko-Hirafu safety liason officer] said what has confused authorities is the weather around the time of Mr McKay's disappearance was calm and clear, which should have made it easy to search. "On Friday, after he went missing, I went out with his buddies and we searched the whole river and you could see everything," he said. "There was no new snow, you would have seen all tracks in the area. On that night, you would have seen if anybody went anywhere.

I wonder if he deliberately disappeared or was abducted?

Niseko-Hirafu isn't big at all and a significant portion of the development is by the Austrailians, from observation and talking to the Australians who confirmed to me it would be 50% or more cheaper for them to ski in Japan than in their own country.

I lost a top-of-the-range camcorder (a high definisition model with 120Gb hard disk) after forgetting to zip back the rucksack a resataurant. It was picked up by a skier on the piste and handed to one of the chairlift statiions. I got it back at the end of the skiing day. The Japanese wanted me to prove ownership so I showed them the video I took earlier. The place appears to be very friendly and orderly.
