Poster: A snowHead

The destruction of three snow-grooming vehicles, their garaging facilities and a 400-seat restaurant at Mt Ruapehu - on the north island of New Zealand - has led police to search for a "determined and organised" arsonist. He or she is believed to have hiked for three hours to start the fires on the ski mountain, which started ten days ago.

Ironically, perhaps, Mt Ruapehu is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is one of few to feature skiing (Mt Etna on the Italian island of Sicily is another). There was a major eruption on Ruapehu in 1995-6.

Quite a few in South America, for example.

Also in the Cascades at (for example) Mt Baker and Mt Hood. Although there's not been been recent significant activity, they're quite capable of blowing.
I'd also be surprised if their weren't volcanic skiing skiing in Japan.
Edit: Ooh, and I forgot Mammoth Lakes.

I spent a day at Ruapehu in the early '90s and was assured it never erupted.

Someone was telling porkies to you eh Pam. Ruapehu coughs and splutters around every 50 years without fail. When it farted in the 50s, a lahar washed away a railway bridge and sent a train into the river killing over 200.
I'm a Ruapehu local and seeing the mushroom cloud rise over me in Sept 95 was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Hope they catch the Fitzwilliams that set fire to the buildings.

Tangiwai railway disaster. Really bad - though there were some inspiring acts of courage.
