Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fly Be- luggage allowance- skis etc

Hello!

We are flying out to Geneva on Sunday with Flybe from Manchester. TO charter the flights.
We have been told that there is a max 20kg allowance, including boots per person and that this is strictly enforced. We have arranged ski carriage, but have been told that the official line is skis to be transported in single pairs, whereas guess who has just gone and bought a big double wheelie ski bag rolling eyes

I spoke to one of the TO team and they said that weight/size of ski bags "has never been a problem so far" but I am a bit worried as they seem to be so strict.

I am wondering if anyone has flown with Flybe with wheelie ski/board bags. Were they weighed?

Thanks Smile

I went with Flybe from Manchester to Geneva on the 8th of Feb.

We were told that boot bags would be counted as additional luggage and charge accordingly unless we took them on as hand baggage and that skis might be a problem because the plane we were on could only carry 10 sets of skis.

Skis went on no problem at all, and when we got to check in we were told that we could put the boots in the hold and there was no mention of extra charges.

I had a double ski bag with two sets of skis that was also stuffed with clothes and had no issues.

We also had a couple in our chalet who had a wheeled board bag who also had no issues.

Is this with VIP chalets or Snowline?

You always have to be a little careful with FlyBe, because they have a fleet which includes a few "small" (even prop driven) planes, which just don't have much luggage room.

But hopefully, they won't be using those on a Manchester-Geneva flight in peak ski season.

All the fly-be planes from Manchester to Geneva are the small prop driven type.

It seems to depend who you speak to at VIP-Chalets. One person scaremongers, the others are more pragmatic and reassuring.

I took my boots on the plane, but we checked my wife's boots in so you don't have to worry about security stopping you taking boots onto the plane either.

Ski weight just didn't seem to be an issue when we checked in.

Went Flybe Manchester to Inverness a couple of weeks ago and they charged my £10 extra as my bag weighed 21.0 KG Sad

Some one I know flew with them to Austria at New Year and was told that they couldnt take their skis. Those few that had pre booked their skis on a first come basis, thought everything was Ok ,only to find their skis had been left behind as there was not enough space Shocked Turbo Prop plane apparently!!Plane obviously not fit for purpose IMHO.

If your skis are prebooked, you'll be fine. They'll be able to tell you how many sets of skis they have been prebooked. The smaller planes can take 10 sets and the larger plane 20 or so. But the 2nd person i spoke to said that they'd not yet failed to get the skis to the resort on the evening of arrival, even if they came on a different plane.

VIP-Chalets/Snowline have chartered the whole plane so hence they have a different agreement as to what allowances are chargeable.

But it's pretty concerning when you're told by VIP that you might not be able to get your skis and boots on to the plane and lets down what was otherwise an excellent holiday experience.

Yes, this is what I found! Good to hear it's not just me who raised this as a potential issue with them though, but maybe they should be singing from the same songsheet, at least

Yes, I heard this too

Agree! I am so looking forward to this holiday and just don't want anything to go wrong. I picked Manchester over Heathrow as it is a bit more accessible, but now thinking I wish I'd asked to fly out of there. We always go with Snowline/VIP and they have been excellent so far, so fingers crossed it wil be ok

Thanks so much Smile

Lucylou, you'll be fine.

I had exactly the same concerns, all of which came to naught when we got to the airport. We travelled from Leicester and also flew from Manchester for the same reason. But the Manchester flight times are a lot more pleasant and you avoid the stupid o'clock wake up when when you have to get back from the resort to the airport.

We had an excellent holiday with VIP, the best chalet experience i've had on a skiing holiday. I'm sure you will too. Where are you going?

Sorry but that isn't always the case.

In January I flew Flybe from Manchester to Salzburg (TO booking) and the plane was one of the small twin turbo prop jobs mentioned above.

There was a 45 minute delay in boarding because of 'some problem with the luggage' and on arrival it transpired that NONE of the pre-booked skis had been loaded. This wasn't a problem to me as I'd left mine at home this trip, but then it WAS a problem as the connection bus had to hang around at the airport while those who HAD booked skis discovered what had happened to them.

The TO were not happy either as they had to pay for a days ski hire for everyone who had brought their own skis. The rep said they didn't normally use Flybe and since they had started using them this problem had occurred on more than one occasion.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, hopefully Flybe have sorted out their luggage issues by now.

 You know it makes sense.

As i said before, this isn't a normal flybe flight.

The planes are chartered in their entirety by VIP Chalets/snowline so the luggage/ski allowances and arrangements are somewhat different to normal.

You don't pre-book your skis with Flybe, you prebook with the tour operator, and they control the number of skis allowed on the plane.

lower, In my case it wasn't a 'normal' flybe flight either. (Flybe don't Fly Manchester to Salzburg unless chartered). This was chartered in its entirety by Directski who told me that since starting to use Flybe they had had several similar problems.

What annoyed everyone involved on my trip, was that because they had trouble fitting all the skis on, they ended up not taking ANY of them. All were pre-booked.

While on the subject, the turbo props used by Flybe are not just small they are slooooowwwww. Flight time to Salzburg 2hours 45 mins, vs 1 hour 40 mins with Ryanair from Stanstead , (in a proper plane with decent engines). Laughing

Ah. What a bunch of swines!

Well we had no issues with the Flybe flight from Manchester to Geneva and its a regular flight so it would appear they're geared up for carrying skis.

I'm sure Lucylou has nothing to worry about.

If i remember correctly it took us approx two hours from Manchester to Geneva. I've not flown that route before so don't know how long it should take.

What i did notice was that if you were sat near the engines it was bloody noisy!
