Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, my 1st post - hope i've got it right.
We are flying into malpensa airport on the 28th march & want to go to arabba.
What is the best way to get there & back?
Tried looking at trenitalia - but seems to be quite a mission to get there.
Will a car split between 3 be the best in the end?
Plus, tried to book at hotel mesdi, but it is full - any other suggestions /experiences?
Does anyone know the hotel Genziana?
Appreciate any input...especially on transport - will be 1st time to Dolomites - any tips welcome.

We did drag skis from Milan to Selva via train and bus all I can say is thank goodness the ski bag had wheels.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

duncanb, If there are three of you, then take a car.
It is quite a long drag - even driving yourselves is going to be 3 hours+ each way, and I don't think any of the normal transfer companies do it to Arabba from that far away.
The car will probably be fractionally cheaper if there are 3 of you, and you will be able to pace the journey as you want, rather than as the transport dictates.

duncanb, I've also been looking at transfers for three people to get to Arabba during the second half of March and have come to the conclusion it's probably going to be the cheapest and most flexible option to hire a car but may need to request snow chains or buy some en-route, so need to factor that into the cost. Having a car does mean it's easier to get to other places like Cortina for the day rather than paying for expensive taxis.
If you want accommodation options and also help with possible transfers then pm Sueski who is a snowhead, as she lives in Arabba and sorts out travel arrangements for a living.

If you hire a car, be very wary of getting a deisel. I did, it froze and couldn't be repaired locally despite adding additive. Hertz said the only way I could get a replacement was to take a 2 hr taxi journey (at their expense) to pick up replacement. As I had already wasted a day sking waiting for the tow-truck I declined. Mind you, they had to pay 260 Euro for a taxi to Venice Marco Polo

duncanb, We were in Selva for 8 days so no I wouldn't rent a car if I did it again, I live in a sparsely populated area, I wasn't up for night driving in the Dolomites with europeans in winter on roads I was unfamiliar with. Not used to seeing drivers pass on blind corners with snow and ice on narrow roads.
Have a great trip.

Our group is going via Treviso airport (about 2 1/2 hours by car/taxi). Taxi €250 each way.

I think the Sella Ronda resorts are the one time I'd always try to use a TO... Good luck to the OP, but hire cars in winter, at night, (as pinhead says) are not a relaxing way to travel and also there always seem to be umpteen hidden charges when hiring at Italian airports.

Excluding my breakdown issue, I got what I thought was a pretty good deal. £320 for a large estate car with chains and a ski rack. I do have third-party car-hire insurance which makes a difference I suppose.
