Poster: A snowHead

Interesting reading the threads on here. But we all know that after a hit, you should replace your helmet.
Last week I landed on my back and my head hit the piste, rather hard - fortunately no damage apart from a slightly stiff neck for a few days. I was glad I was NOT wearing a helmet, for I would have wanted to replace it following the incident.

Every 5 years - or significant impact affecting the shell

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

stoatsbrother, Agree, check the condition of the shell, any splits or dents and it's time for a new one. Check the condition of the inner shell too for any breaking or cracking of the foam/polystyrene/whatever. Also check the straps and strap mounting points.
James the Last, by the sound of it, your recent excursion to the deck wouldn't have totalled your lid had you been wearing one, mines taken a few whacks over the past few years and as long as the inner padding is ok and the shell is in good condition it's still fine to use.

James the Last, I've had that kind of bang fairly often (goes with the territory for beginner snowboarders). I've not even considered buying a new one - would have cost me a fortune already! I don't think the sort of bang from which your naked head emerged unscathed would count as a "significant impact".

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

achilles, Interesting thread, and agree with it on the point - If you have a big impact, get it checked and replace if necessary. Minor knocks and bumps are absorbed by the shell, though any deformation of the shell will damage the foam below as it acts as a crumple zone, the outer can spring back into shape leaving a void beneath.

achilles, interesting, thanks. I didn't hurt my head, really, other than just the impact (yes, whiplash, but that's different). I'd have had to have three or four new helmets in m first week (including the time when the seat of a drag lift clonked me one). Got to have a sense of proportion, I think. We all know that ski helmets are not going to be a lot of good if you smash into a tree (good thing I don't ski in trees then). The kind of elderly-lady stuff I do is what many folk do without helmets at all. We would probably be safer wearing helmets and fire-retardant suits to drive our cars but unless we're in F1 we don't.

My helmet was around 2 years before shell delamination was prevalent due to the helmet hitting things! So I bought another Giro. Should last as long as it's not involved in too many crashes.

On an x-ray machine. Costly. Might just as well buy a new one.
If it's worth bothering to wear a helmet, then it's worth bothering to wear one that you know will work. Surely?
