Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Val D'Isere - Le Fornet

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I've booked to stay in Le Fornet on the 22nd March for a week (I'm already giddy with excitement!) I need to book ski hire, we have our own boots but am struggling to find anything in Le Fornet itself everything is just down the road in Val d'Isere. Does anyone know if there is a ski hire shop in Le Fornet and where I can find it on the web?

Thank you muchly Very Happy

I don't think there's very much in Le FOrnet, but there's a free bus that runs both regularly and frequently betweem Le Fornet and the centre of Val d'Isere. If you've booked with a tour op they'll porbably run you down to the hire shop anyway - ours did when we went (and stopped off at the supermarket for us to pick up some beer on the way back, nice chaps!)

Rach, the bus into Val centre takes jus two minues or so. It's dead easy to get around Val and to be honest, it'll be quicker than walking from some parts of Val centre.

You've deffo picked the best spot in the area - Fornet iss amazig. The Mangard run off the Foret cable car is excellent and there's amazing off-piste in the trees below the cable car that is dead easy. The balck that runs down is good too. The cafe under the Fornet cable car is very good value and does decent food.

Theres nothing in Le fornet, one resturant I think, but it is an amazing place to stay, we did a few years ago. Get the first cable car in the morning up to the glacier and you'll have it all to yourselves. We managed to do several laps of the glacier before anybody else at all turned up. If you do go out into val for a night out be careful as its a long walk back once the buses have stopped.

Thanks for the advice. Think i'll just book the ski hire through the website I found. If the bus runs regularly then we should be ok. I'm not too bothered that there isn't too much in Le Fornet, the chalet looks lovely so I think we'll be happy with a few beers before our evening meal then chilling in the chalet and an early night so we can be up bright and early and on the slopes.

How long does it take to ski down the Tignes from Le Fornet, is it possible to do in a morning - have lunch there then ski back in the afternoon?

Ski from Le Fornet down to Les Brevieres? That'd be a good day out.....but certainly do-able. And an excellent lunch available at that place just down the main street - someone will know the name....

If you want to ski to tignes it is probably best to get the bus into val in the morning as one of the connecting lifts, the leissiers express, is often closed in high winds as it is very exposed. Then it is easy to ski to the furthest part of the espace killy in the morning and back in the afternoon. I went on an indirect route with my brother from val to tignes les breviers and made it back in time for lunch and afternoon ski school.

Fornet to tignes is okay to do but you'll have to motor it and get a plethora of lifts. Ultimately, you still have to go down into Val centre to get the lift up Bellevarde, which si where the runs tha take you to the Tignes link starts.

We went in December and although we really enjoyed the off-piste in Tignes, and the runs near the snowpark, Val was miles better. Fornet itself was something special - the tree runs are amazing.

Wow, I keep hearing great things about the skiing in Fornet. I'm so excited I almost got my skiing bits out last night to start getting ready. Probably a bit early as its just over a month away.

Any good mountain restaurants that you can all recommend that won't cost the earth?

 You know it makes sense.

Rach,

Quickest route from Le Fornet to Tignes Les Brevieres is:-

Bus from Le Fornet to Val D'Isere Rond Point, where the bus terminates throught the tunnel.

Ski down 200 metres to the Olympique Gondola lift and take it to the top of Bellevarde.

Ski down one of the blue (Diebold) or green runs to the Tommeuses 8 man chair lift and take that lift to the top of Toviere.

Ski down the blue run "Piste H" or red "Cretes" and "Combe Folle" pistes towrds Tignes val Claret and Tignes Le Lac.

Ski down the top part part of the black Trolles piste towards Tignes Le Lac. The only bit of Trolles that is black is the very bottom of it.

Don't ski the last steep black part of the "Trolles" piste into Tignes Le Lac. Instead take the path down to the right as you look down at Tignes Le Lac.

This path takes you passed and below Tignes Le Lac to the Chaudanne Chair Lift. Take this lift.

You can then ski down to Tignes Les Brevieres using the blue or red runs which take you passed the top of the Sache de Vallon gondola lift which is the lift you need to return from Tignes Les Brevieres.

There are no cheap restaurants on the mountain. However a nice one to have lunch in the sunshine is the one at the top of the Chaudannes Chair Lift above Tignes Le Lac. Alternatively there are some very nice restaurants in Tignes Les Brevieres, one opposite you when you cross the bridge over the river the other one is "The Sachette" which is down the High St and opposite the church.

Other really nice restaurants in Le Fornet are L'Arolay on the main road as it exits Le Fornet towards Val D'Isere and Edelweiss towards the bottom of the Mangard blue piste just above Le Fornet.

Rach, I have stayed in Tignes several times and always make my way to le Fornet at least once in the week. There are two excellent restaurants in the vicinity l'Ancolie (I thinkthat's its name) in the village itself, and one just above the village on the right hand side of the blue (mangard).
You'll have to eat out one night - so l'Ancolie looks a good bet and I would advise at least one lunch in the other one whose name escapes me.

PS Have just googled it and it's called Edelwiess

The food is indeed excellent in the Edelwiess and if you can get a terrace seat at lunchtime - what could be better? Actually I reckon you give it a run for its money if my memories of the 2008 EOSB don't fail me wink

Afraid not Nick, I bought the apartment in Chamonix I was no doubt talking about (and a pair of Shamans off Kiwi1) so can't justify the cost of The EOSB as I'm in Cham for a fortnight before it and a week after. Hope to see you again sometime, maybe EOSB '10 (or you might fancy a few days in Cham next year with myself and Casino).

If I didn't say it enough last year then thanks for the catering in VT, you were supposed to get a bootle of cognac for Xmas for your trouble - but Casino said he would organise it rolling eyes .

Rach sorry Embarassed .

I would second that, they did an excellent job last year of fitting boots for my wife (fairly advanced) then at the end of the few days hire recommending a higher level pair to buy (which they didn't sell) which had the same fit AND handing over the built up footbeds they had made for her to fit to the new boots they weren't even selling her!

would third the recommendation for snowberry. I was there a few weeks ago and had some problems with new boots I bought in the UK. used their bootfitter charlie who didnt even charge in the end - free consult to sort out the minor issues giving me two black toes!

and we also stayed in fornet, the chalet out there was great, the bus service regular and in the evenings leaves at .15, .30. 45 and on the hour. saves any waiting in the cold. everything you could ask for. would love to go again!!!
