Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

ski boots as hand luggage at chamberry - result

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
went to ADH via chamberry using crystal (thomson fly). contated them before i went to ask about ski boots as hand luggage (have issues with my feet so need to be sure my own boots are safe - same sorty for my wife).
Got it in writing that it would be OK. going out from east mids was no issue. sailed through security.
coming back noticed signs all over chanberry saying not allowed. was tempted to not say anything and show our letters (including one form the doctors) at security. I deceided to go to crystal desk and check the situation out. they said no boots as hand luggage. I said "why" - the airline are happy with it. they said chamberry security were the issue. they sent a senior airport rep to sort it out. she was very helpful and got chamberry staff involved. they were extremely helpful and the pretty young lady i dealt with spoke perfect english and was very understanding.
eventually we were escorted through security by her and she spoke to the securiyy staff and explained it all to them. they were fine about it after reading the paperwork and they but our boot through the xray and set us on our way.
as a side point- we got our baby milk out of our hand luggage and was getting ready to sip it to prove it was milk (like we have to do at UK airports) .the security guy looked at us like we were idiots and said "you have a baby. of course you have to bring milk !! no need to drink it !!". what a sensible and refreshing attitude rather than the jobsworth attitude you get in the UK

all in all a lot of hassle and it should not be necessary but we got the result we needed. I hate chamberry airport but the the staff were very very nice !

backhojo, good to hear you had no problems. Does make a bit of a farce of the rule though doesn't it?!!

Perhaps it was the doctor's letters that swung it for you? One of our group was sent back to check his boots, at Chambrey, a few weeks back, and no amount of debating was going to change the security peoples minds.

But it's about time we had standard rules that we could agree on and know exactly where we stand.

I pack mine to take away any hassle, but i'd be happy to buy more and claim off insurance if my case got lost.
Very Happy

Does your insurance company not pay out only 75% for 1-year-old ski kit, 50% for 2-years-old, 25% for 3-years old and 0% for 4-years old and older? Some don't...

its not easy to replace our boots. took me seceral months and lots of moulding of insoles and blowing the shell to get them right. cant just pop in a shop and get more. also they have heaters in them which are a faf to install.
I fear the docs letter may have to come out every year !!

anyone know the rules for easy jet out of east mids and back out of geneva ?

You'll need to Register first of course.

That sounds like good news for you, but TBH I am going to pack my boots into my case and not bother with having the added stress of having to ask nice airport staff who will probably be ticked off after half term to waive the rule.

i think the added stress at the airport far outways the considerable inconvenience and stress if they get misplaced.

We recently (2 weeks ago) took ski boots which were very obviously that, (in a bootbag) from Liverpool easyjet to GVA and back without any comment or problem

For me the gross inconvenience of lugging boots around as hand luggage far outweighs the very low (IME) risk of losing the boots. And I most certainly do need individually fitted boots. Each to his own.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

boots are not big or heavy in the hand luggage if you , like me, have small feet !!
we have had some boots go to las vegas when we were in denver a few years ago. The missus had to ski in rental boots for the first day and it ruined her day . that is what motivates us to put them in hand luggage. We have one of those small rectangualr cases / bags with wheels on so we can drag them about the airport. We are at an advantage with only having size 6 feet !

backhojo, like you, I always take my skiboots in my small wheely handluggage, having lost a suitcase with skiboots in a few years ago-- I don't let my current beloved ones out of my sight! Very Happy

GVA/Easyjet seem particularly relaxed. I've seen folks walk on with 65 litre sacks with stuff hanging off. Mind you, they were quick enough to spot an overlooked Nalgene bottle with some water in the last time I came back. Luckily they disposed of the water and I got my bottle back quickly. I've no idea of the situation with ski boots though.

Airports are hassle enough so why try to make things difficult for yourself? I expect Chambery have simply had an incident involving ski boots so now they are sensitive to them.

Chambery have also stopped helmets going through as hand luggage. We had to check them in a couple of weeks ago.

I just seems like such a pyrrhic victory for the rest of us that don' t have the magic medical note. I'll stick mine in my suitcase.
