Boot sizes, is say 26.5 wider but not longer than a 26 (ie the .5 refers to width)

I think (CEM will be able to confirm this) the actual boots are the same size, but the 26 would have a thicker lining than the 26.5. Some boots seem to fit people with wider feet better than others. Again CEM is your man (woman?) for boot advice on here...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

kendub, there is no difference in the shell, and most times the only difference is the thickness of the sock liner [the flat cheap insole they put in...which any bootfitter will rip out and replace] some brands [on some models] use denser padding over the saddle of the liner [around the instep either side ofthe tongue] this makes the x.0 feel snugger than the x.5 when new it packs out to just the same ater a week or two
the width rumour is one that was spread a few [many] years ago by a couple of the boot brands some ski shop owners still believe it and if someone says it is a width difference i would suggest leaving their store and finding a fitter who knows the real facts
there are a couple of exceptions to the 26.0 & 26.5 being the same, the only current one in alpine boots being the atomic B tech boots where a 25.5 and 26.0 are the same [a 26 from anyone else] 26.5 & 27.0 are a 27.0 from anyone else this is due to the sole length of the boot being 3mm shorter than the performance boot in their range at the time, they felt that they couldn't have a comfort boot which a shorter sole than the performance boot in the same size...so they changed the size split
hope that helps explain the question

My Rossignol 25.5 have an inner marked 25.5/26.5, not sure though whether this suggests that 25 and 26 have a different inner.

Jane L, often times the companies will use a panel for 4 "sizes" ie two shell sizes in this case 25.0, 25.5, 26.0,26.5 i am guessing that this is stamped on the plastic of either the tongue or the plastic wrap which surrounds the back of the liner the cuff of most boots is also like this 23-24.5 then 25-26.5, 27-28.5 etc the next size up has a bit more material in it making it taller and have more wrap...they assume that someone with bigger feet is taller and has bigger legs to go round

So what really is the point of the half sizes when they are the same shell in most cases?
