Here's a lesser-reported story from this week's World Championships in Val d'isere:
A British businessman who's devoted much time and energy to boosting the opportunities of Nepalese skiers on the world stage has encountered the classic hurdle. The skis of Shyam Dhakal and Subash Khatri don't meet FIS specifications, and their coach (for about the last decade) Richard Morley is trying his best to get them equipment in time for this week's giant slalom - the only event for which they might qualify.
This report from Republica (via Reuters)
Strangely, this report is also carried on the blog of Rod Gilmour of The Telegraph - here - but without linking to the source or crediting it. The Republica story is far more informative and worthwhile.
Anyone have any comments on the accessibility of big ski championships (Olympics, World Championships, World Cup) to the smaller nations?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

David Goldsmith,
A local Val D'Isere Ski Instructor has donated GS skis to the Nepalese skiers which they are now practising on in preparation for the race.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I see these guys in Les Arcs all the time as they are based in Villaroger. Interesting chatting to them about what they are doing, pity they do not get more involved with the local racing scene, then this problem could have been avoided if locals here had know about it in advance. Has anyone seen them, they have quite distinct jackets and sometimes do the Fleche races in Arc 1800.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I just read the article, does anyone know Richard Morley mobile phone number. There might still be time to help them if someone can PM me the number.

welshflyer, I am pleased to hear that they now have some skis. Good luck to them.
It is interesting to read other articles dated back to 2002. It gives you a much better picture of what this is all about. Pity you did not include this link also when you first posted this thread David.

In case anyone else is also interested in the details behind this team. I am not sure now that they need as much help as the latest article indicates.
But good luck to them anyway. The guys I have met in Les Arcs are very keen to do well just like any other ski racer. It is just a pity that some stories are a little misleading.

snowcrazy, David Goldsmith,
There are over 70 nationalities taking part in this year's World Skiing Championships in Val D'Isere. I'm not sure where to find the full list of those nations (probably the official WSC Website).
It isn't only the "minor" nations who have issues trying to comply with the equipment regulations. Before Xmas wasn't Bode Miller DSQ'd for having ski boots that were 1mm too high?

welshflyer, yup, and Ted Ligety was DQ'd from the super-combined at the world champs after the downhill leg cos his bindings were 0.17mm too high!
